Navigation Aids, Equipment and Simulator Training Management (NAESTM) (Management Level) (STCW A-I/12)

Prerequisites OOW (deck) CoC under Regulation II/1 of the STCW with at least 12 months watchkeeping service and either NAEST Operational Course certificate obtained after 1st January 2005 or MCA Approved ECDIS course issued in line with IMO Model Course 1.27.
Assessment There is no formal examination, but delegate’s performance and understanding will be continuously assessed throughout the Course.
Teaching Classroom theory based sessions followed on by practical navigational exercises in ship handling simulator.
Accreditation/Approval MCA as per the Section A-I/12 of the STCW Code governing the use of simulators for training and assessment and the MNTB standard for NAEST Management Course.
This is an MCA approved mandatory course aimed at Deck Officers seeking a second certificate of competency (at management level) in accordance with Regulation II/2 of the STCW Convention.
Running over 60 hours in 8 days, the Course is highly practical in nature, using the modern simulator facilities of the LJMU Maritime Centre. The course can however be offered in 5 days for candidates following a planned scheme of training approved by the MNTB or as part of a college/university based study course of preparation for a certificate of competency as Chief Mate.
The aim of the training is to maintain safe navigation through the use of Radar, ARPA, electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), automatic identification systems (AIS) and modern navigation Systems to assist command decision-making and application of Effective Bridge Team management principles and procedures.
Upon successful completion of Course, delegates are issued with a course completion verification showing that they have achieved the competency to evaluate navigational information derived from all sources including radar and ARPA and thereby make and implement command decisions for collision avoidance and for directing the safe navigation of the Ship. Delegates accepted onto the Course will be proficient in basic procedures including passage planning, parallel indexing and radar plotting.
