Social impact

Every year, more than 350 LJMU students in our education and childhood programmes are placed in local early years provision, family learning and SEN settings. This is part of their practice learning experience.

LJMU is working with Crawford House Community Partnership in Toxteth-Dingle to raise literacy levels. This is done through family literacy and young adult learning projects.

We are also developing an aspirational programme with KIND. This initiative brings children and young people from North Liverpool into the School of Education as part of an Out-Reach: In-Reach project.

Our School of Education and School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences jointly deliver Absolute Chemistry, which is focused on raising aspirations, fostering science identity and increasing the number of people from underrepresented groups including learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to aim for a career in the sciences.

The Liverpool Institute for Research in Education (LIFE) advances world-leading research in education. Its impact extends locally, nationally and internationally.

Succeeding the Centre for Educational Research (CERES), it unites diverse experts to enhance research at LJMU.

Our Centre for Educational Leadership collaborates with senior education leaders across the city. We work with early years, schools, FE colleges and lifelong learning organisations.

During the 2022/2023 academic year, we committed over £2m to support students facing financial hardship. Nearly 3,000 students received aid through the cost-of-living crisis, with an average of £700 per application.

LJMU also supports every LLB Law student with the opportunity to gain pro bono work experience through our Legal Advice Centre. This support extends from their first year of study onwards.

The Legal Advice Centre focuses on supporting people and organisations facing social, economic, or physical vulnerability.

In 2023, the university invested £2.6m in pro bono clinics to support community partners and the public. These clinics provide accessible walk-in advice in accounting, business and law.

The Legal Advice Centre is the only pro bono clinic in the region offering specialist support to the Windrush Community.

LJMU works with a wide range of charities and organisations to support communities across the city region and beyond. This includes delivering community projects with the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton In The Community.

The university also donates to causes such as Micah Liverpool and offers volunteering opportunities for staff and students.

LJMU is working with partners on a new £6.75m initiative. The goal is to make the Liverpool City Region a leader in music industry research, development and innovation.

The initiative, called MusicFutures, is a government-funded Creative Cluster programme. It aims to create jobs, harness creativity and drive economic growth in the city region.

LJMU is a supporter of and contributor to Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s largest free festival of contemporary art. It is one of the world’s leading biennials, engaging well over 100,000 visitors.

The Liverpool School of Art and Design regularly contributes technical and academic expertise.

The university curated an exhibition celebrating the impact and legacy of the iconic Liverpool company, Littlewoods. Littlewoods was world-famous for its football gambling and retail business.

At its peak, it employed 30,000 people, most of whom were women. LJMU showcased the stories of its workers at the Museum of Liverpool.

LJMU is a key partner in a major initiative to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The university is developing a creative project with Royal British Legion and Liverpool Commonwealth Association.

The project will create an exhibit telling the Commonwealth story in a contemporary way. The piece will be displayed in a national museum and also travel to other places in the UK.
