Your LJMU Library: 24/7 services, Academic Achievement, IT help and free kit

Whether you’re new to the university or a returning student, our library buildings and support teams are here to help and guide you through your academic studies.

24/7 library services and library opening hours

Your library is available around the clock. There is a 24/7 online chat service called Ask the Library to answer your questions and help you wherever you may be, and you can find thousands of online books and journals to support your studies away from campus.

On campus, the Student Life Building (SLB) is open 24/7 with access to study space, PCs and to borrow laptops (including macs). The SLB also has a Digital Studio, where you can explore and develop your digital skills and creativity, and the library desk is open Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 7pm, and weekends, 10am to 4pm,  where you can ask library staff for help and advice.

The Aldham Robarts Library provides specialist subject support for those studying across arts, professional, social studies, business and law courses and is located on our Mount Pleasant Campus.

The Avril Robarts Library provides specialist subject support to health, science, engineering and technology-focused courses and is based on our City Campus.

Both libraries are open Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 7pm, and weekends, 10am to 4pm, during term time with staff available to help you find books and journals, and to support with both your library and digital skills.

Key support and services for all students

Assignment and assessment support with the Academic Achievement Team

The Academic Achievement Team is here to offer advice on studying at university, as well as how to write great assignments and do your best in assessments. They teach classes; offer drop-in sessions throughout the week; give personalised advice through in-person, online or email appointments; create self-study resources and guides; and can support students with referral or deferral work.

Visit the Academic Achievement webpages to get contact the team and find out more about the academic skills support on offer.

Please note: For our returning students, the way you book an appointment with Academic Achievement has been updated for the new academic year. You can book an in-person, Microsoft Teams or email appointment via the Academic Achievement webpages or Canvas module.

IT support through the Digital Engagement Team

Our Digital Engagement Team can provide expert in-person advice on a range of IT topics. From help laying out coursework, creating Excel graphs, or setting up PowerPoint presentations to printing, copying and scanning. You can also get support with Canvas, LJMU apps and software, multi-factor authentication (MFA) and common queries about passwords and logging on.

Find out more about IT support in the library.

The team can also support you remotely via live chat and with online guides. Bookmark the IT help for students webpage to quickly access support during your studies.

Get free IT kit through our laptop voucher or recycling schemes

Students can apply for a free laptop or recycled IT kit through the IT support schemes:

  • Laptop voucher scheme: Open to new, full time, Level 3 and 4 students only. You can apply for a free voucher to buy a new laptop from an external IT company (eligibility criteria applies) and the 2024 scheme closes for applications on Friday 4 October.
  • Recycled IT kit: Open to all students, apply for a recycled and refurbished PC.

Find out more about the eligibility criteria, via the Student Support webpages under IT Support on the drop-down menu.

Book a PC or loan a laptop

It’s not just at our libraries where you can find study spaces and PCs or laptops. There are other buildings on campus to access these resources. See what’s available near you using the Free PCs platform.
