Tim Hetherington's "Infidel"

Liverpool John Moores University is exhibiting the powerful work of internationally-renowned and award-winning Liverpool photojournalist Tim Hetherington in the city from today. LJMU's Journalism department in the Liverpool Screen School is presenting the exhibition entitled ‘Infidel’, in association with the Tim Hetherington Trust – set up by the parents of the late photojournalist from Liverpool who was killed in a mortar attack in Libya in April 2011. The University also has a work-based fellowship named after the late photojournalist and human rights activist for journalism students.

The exhibition presents a mixture of photographs and video, drawn from his work in Afghanistan and published as the book “Infidel”. In this work Hetherington focused on the experience of war from the perspective of the individual. Through his photographs, writing and films, Hetherington provided new ways to look at and think about human experience in war.

A private viewing of the exhibition took place on Wednesday evening in the presence of special guests including Tim’s parents Alistair and Judith Hetherington along with his friend and colleague Stephen Mayes who helped establish the Tim Hetherington Trust.

Steve Harrison, from the Liverpool Screen School said: “We're delighted to be hosting the exhibition as the Journalism department has strong links with Tim's mum and dad and, through them, the Tim Hetherington Trust set up in his memory. The idea of hosting the exhibition came out of conversations with them.

"Tim was a photojournalist from Liverpool who we feel is a figure of inspiration to our students. We want to make them aware of his work as part of Tim's legacy. And the exhibition also contributes to the wider cultural life of the city, as it has previously been shown in New York and Amsterdam – it's nice to add Liverpool to that list!

"I've been really delighted by the response I've had when I've asked for help in setting this all up – people seem genuinely moved by the work, and by Tim's story."

Tim Hetherington’s mission to create a better understanding of the world cast him in many roles: photojournalist, filmmaker, human rights advocate, artist and a leading thinker in media innovation. Working and living in Africa for many years, the Liverpool-born photographer explored the consequences of conflict and quickly came to document conflict itself before delving deeper to understand the origins and causes of violence. This and other work took him around the world, including a year-long study of American fighting forces in Afghanistan from 2007 to 2008 resulting in the Oscar-nominated film Restrepo and Infidel book.

The exhibition is at the John Lennon Art and Design Building, Duckinfield Street, Liverpool, L3 5RD from 15-23 September. Admission is free, from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
