Professor Phil Vickerman

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Initiatives)

Phil has overarching responsibility for a range of strategic initiatives across the University, as directed by the Vice-Chancellor. The role involves a revolving brief which is dependent on the strategic priorities for the University at any point in time. Phil works alongside the other Pro-Vice Chancellors to drive forward priority areas for the University both internally and externally.

Phil’s portfolio of responsibilities have included: leadership of Liverpool Business School, supporting its transition to a Faculty, and development of the University’s People and Organisational Development Strategy ensuring we attract, develop and retain the best staff from across the world.

Phil is presently the academic lead for the connected University village developments. The village aims to create a vibrant, welcoming community in the heart of Liverpool that brings a renewed sense of identity and belonging to the University’s current portfolio of 43 buildings.

Phil has also acted as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies and the Faculty of Education, Health and Community during periods of transition.

Phil sits on the Strategic Management Team of the University.

Phil is a National Teaching Fellow, awarded by the Higher Education Academy in 2005, and has led a number of national and international pedagogic projects funded by external agencies. He has a particular interest in inclusive education and learning and is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

He is a Professor of Inclusive Education and Learning and works nationally and internationally in the areas of Physical Education, Sport, Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability. His research interests focus around the training of Physical Education (PE) teachers for the inclusion of children with SEN. He also has an interest in research on gaining insights into children with SEN and their experiences of PE.

He has advised agencies such as the Department for Education and the Equality and Human Rights Commission on best practice training materials for teachers. Phil is a member of several editorial and advisory boards and a trustee of two educational social enterprises.
