Biography

I am an Associate Professor of History of Education with 20 years of experience in conducting history of education research. I have published several monographs and numerous articles in the history of education and co-edited two special issues in peer reviewed Taylor and Francis journals, one which has been re-issued as a book by Routledge.

My interests are in the social and cultural history of education and childhood, with a focus on educational reform, health education, bodily and sensory education, nutritional education, and modes and aspects of sense making in education broadly conceived.

I am a member of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE), the European Educational Research Association (EERA), the History of Eduction Society UK (HES), and the Belgian-Dutch History of Education Society (BENGOO). I have served as a member of the Scientific Board/Reviewing Committee for the 38th Annual Conference of the ISCHE in Chicago, 17th-21st August 2016 and the 39th Annual Conference of the ISCHE in Buenos Aires, 18th-21st July 2017. I am also a convenor of Network 17 (Histories of Education) of the European Educational Research Association (EERA). Finally, I am a member of the International Scientific Board of the peer reviewed journals Espacio, Tiempo y Educación and Rivista di Storia dell'Educazione, and I am registered as Associate Professor in REPRISE, the Register of Scientific Experts set up at the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, for peer reviewing of research project applications in the area of Fundamental Research.

Thus far, I have been successfully awarded, through competitive bidding, external research grants:
- in 2011, as PI, through the Fonds National de la Recherche Luxembourg (FNR) (ca. €120,000) for the research project TBHELS ("Transforming Bodies: Health and Education in Luxembourg's Schools, ca. 1840-1920");
- in 2013 and 2014, as CI (co-designer and until 2015 co-coordinator together with Assoc. Prof. Karin Priem), again through the FNR (total: €1,517,000), for the research projects FAMOSO(-2) ("Fabricating Modern Societies: Industries of Reform as Educational Responses to Societal Problems", part 1 and 2);
- in 2018, as PI (together with Professor Fabio Pruneri as CI), through EERA, Stichting Paedagogica Historica, and the University of Sassari, for the project Looking Back Going Forward: School_Time in Flux and Flow in Europe and beyond (ca. €5,500).

From June to July 2016, I was awarded, again through competitive bidding, a Visiting Scholarship (Scientist/Professor) by the University of Sassari. From December 2015 to September 2017 I was granted a Research Fellowship at the University of Liege (Research Group Cultures Sensibles). In December 2017, finally, I was awarded the chance to organise the 10th History of Education Doctoral Summer School which takes place in Liverpool from 13 to 16 June 2019 (https://hedss10.wordpress.com/).

I have just co-edited, together with Prof. Ian Grosvenor (University of Birmingham), a special issue for The Senses and Society entitled "Learning to Make Sense: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Sensory Education and Embodied Enculturation". The special issue brings into dialogue multi-/inter-sensorial approaches to education as a process and praxis central to 'enculturation', which has always involved 'embodied' learning and imaginaries thereof, rather than mere cognitive processing.
