I am an experienced academic with a background in both Policing and Psychology. Prior to joining Liverpool John Moores University I was a Force Trainer with North Wales Police, based in the Specialist Operations Department. In this Force Trainer role I delivered initial and refresher police training on personal safety, first aid, ethics and decision-making, communication and conflict management, working with vulnerable people, and responding to incidents. As part of this role I was also North Wales Police’s Lead Trainer and Force Supervisor for the Intoxilyzer Training and Evidential Procedures Course. In addition to this full-time role I was also an A/S/Inspector for Education & Training with North Wales Police advising on Specials PEQF & training issues. Operationally I worked on Response at Deeside Station and in the Eastern Roads Policing Unit and qualified as a Personal Safety Trainer. Before joining North Wales Police as a Force Trainer I was Senior Lecturer in Policing and Programme Leader for the BA(Hons) Policing Studies at Glyndwr University.
On the academic side, I am a Chartered Psychologist with BA(Hons) degrees in both Psychology and Law, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, an MSc in Applied Psychology and a PhD in Applied Psychology (focusing on young drivers’ risk-taking attitudes and offending behaviours). I have management and consultancy experience in the commercial sector (having worked as a Consultant for Oracle, and Leader of Human Factors Research at BP Research where I procured and managed international research projects), and academic experience as a university researcher (University of Cambridge & the University of Manchester). I have held tenured Lecturer & Senior Lecturer positions in Psychology & Applied Health (at Middlesex University, the University of Chester & Edge Hill University), and Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Policing (Glyndwr University). I have taught across the areas of policing and applied health and legal psychology at undergraduate and masters level, and have supervised level 6 & 7 dissertations. My research interests span across driver offending behaviour and roads policing, and health psychology. I am an active researcher and a reviewer for high profile journals. I joined LJMU in July 2020 as a Lecturer in Policing and I am module leader for, and teach on, the Level 5 Professional Skills for Policing and the Psychology of Investigation modules.
