I am currently studying for my MPhil, leading to PhD , part time. I am undertaking a qualitative research study, titled Living with Congenital Heart Disease; an exploration of the lived experiences of adolescents and their parents/carers.
Adolsecents are young people who are developing into an adult, between the ages of 10-19 years. This transisition is a time of change emmotionally and physically, including identity seeking, commencing secondary school, begining puberty, sexual relationships with others, and exploration of activites that may impact on their health, such a smoking and drinking. This period of time is made more challenging if the adolsecent is a CHD patient due to their exisiting health condition.
It is important to understand what it feels like to be an adolescent with ACHD, so they, and their parents/guardians, can be supported during the period of adolescence. In addition, healthcare professionals need to understand their needs, to be able to plan their care, and direct then to the appropriate ACHD services to meet their needs.
