Biography

Martin was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at LJMU in August 2002. He was the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Social Work from 2005 - 2013 prior to taking phased retirement and reducing his working week to 3 days. He is currently the Erasmus Coordinator for Social Work and the Link Tutor responsible for overseeing the delivery of LJMU Social Work Programmes at the City of Liverpool College (COLC).

Martin started teaching in HE in 1988 and was the Subject Manager in Social Work at COLC from 1992-2002. He promotes University Education through his involvement in Primary School Careers Events and Secondary School Mock Interview sessions.
He Chaired the Merseyside Social Work Post-Qualifying Consortium from 2001-2007 and has been an External Advisor to University and College Degree Validation Panels for 21 years.

Since 1994 he has been a User Complaints Panel Chairperson and Complaints Investigator for Local Authorities in the North West. From 1976-1988 Martin was a Statutory Field Social Worker with Liverpool City Council. For 3 years he acted as an advocate for young people in secure units on behalf of the Voice for the Child in Care organisation.

For a good portion of his working life before joining LJMU Martin was an active Trade Unionist taking several roles including Workplace Representative, Stewards Committee Secretary and Branch Chairperson.

Critical Perspectives, Poverty and Social Exclusion, Psychology + Social Work Methods are Martin's main teaching interests.
