Biography

Tim Stott is a Professor of Physical Geography and Outdoor Education at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) which he joined in 1994, having previously been a Geography tutor for the Field Studies Council and Secondary school Teacher of Geography at Barnard Castle School. His research interests are mainly in hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, with over 30 years of experience working on sediment transport dynamics since he began his fluvial geomorphology PhD investigating "Forestry Effects on Sediment Sources, Dynamics and Yields in The Balquhidder Catchments, Central Scotland" in 1984 when he worked in the Department of Environmental Science, University of Stirling (on a Natural Environment Research Council CASE Award Studentship with the Institute of Hydrology). He worked at the Plynlimon Experimental Catchments in mid-Wales (1994-99), then began his recent work which has been concerned with the impact of climate change on proglacial suspended sediment dynamics and sediment redistribution in the proglacial zones of rapidly retreating glaciers in Arctic and Alpine regions. He has carried out fieldwork in Iceland (1 season), Svalbard (3 seasons), Greenland (2 seasons), French Alps (4 seasons), Swiss Alps (1 season); and British Columbia (2 seasons). He is currently involved with the International Atomic Energy Agency on the INT-5153 project (2014-18) on the impact of climate change on land-water-ecosystem quality in polar and mountainous regions for which he has produced a literature database and participated in an expert mission to one of the 13 Benchmark sites for this project, the Aldegonda glacier in Svalbard (Jul-15) and he is also a named scientist for the Castle Creek (Canada) benchmark site.

He has published over 80 journal papers, 10 book chapters and two books on various topics concerned with bedload transport, suspended sediment transport and bank erosion. He has published on the benefits of fieldwork and expeditions, e-Learning, on-line learning and assessment, and the design, development and evaluation of virtual field guides, as well as on student employability in outdoor education. He has made over 110 conference and seminar presentations around the world . He has been a research fellow at Charles Sturt University, NSW, Australia in 2001 and at The University of Queensland, Brisbane in 2005. He collaborates in research with University of Northern British Columbia, University of Edinburgh and with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He has directed/supervised five successful LJMU PhD students in fluvial geomorphology, outdoor and environmental education, one MSc student and currently supervises three PhD students. He has been external examiner for 15 PhDs, 3 MPhils and 3 MSc students at a range of institutions in UK and Canada. He has been a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Leadership since 2005, reviews editor for fluvial geomorphology for the journal Progress in Physical Geography (2009-12) and reviewer for several top academic journals in physical geography/geomorphology and outdoor/adventure education. He has taught on the BSc (Hons) Outdoor Education programme at LJMU since 1994 and has been its programme leader from 1997-2011. He has also taught on the BSc (Hons) Geography programme at LJMU.
