Biography

I have obtained a degree in Physics and a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). I then have had a Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Fund that allowed me to spend three years at Mt Stromolo Observatory (Australian National University, Canberra, Australia). I have then held positions at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA, USA) and at the Space Telescope Science Institute (Baltimore, MD, USA) before LJMU in 2005.

I have published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journal. My research is centred on variable and transient sources. I work on Cepheid variable stars, mostly to refine and improve their use as distance indicators in the Universe. I also work on gamma-ray bursts and in particular their associated supernovae.

I am part of the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN), a project that monitors the whole night sky every other night. I work on nearby supernovae and on new types of transients found by ASAS-SN. The robotic Liverpool Telescope, owned and operated by LJMU, is a central part of my observational efforts.
