Biography

Dr. Michaela Gkantou is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering. She completed her undergraduate studies (8.51/10) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2012. During her undergraduate studies, she won an academic performance scholarship granted from the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece (IKY) but also a full scholarship for the second level master degree in design of steel structures in 2013 at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, from which she graduated with distinction (110/110 cum laude). She was awarded her PhD on the nonlinear response of high strength steel structures from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2017.

The period 2014-2018 she worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Her principal research interests in respect of which she has authored numerous journal and conference papers focus on the response and design of high strength steel, stainless steel, aluminium and prestressed steel structures at cross-sectional, member and system level. She has expertise in structural testing and finite element modelling. Additional research interests include wind energy structures, topology optimisation and life cycle assessment.

Dr Gkantou is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Member of t the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) and of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).
