Dr. Sean Loughney began his post as a Lecturer in Maritime Management in April 2019, within the Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine (LOOM) Research Institute. He received his PhD in Offshore Engineering, from LJMU in February 2018 and his MEng (1st class hons) in Mechanical and Marine Engineering in 2014, also from LJMU. He received the Gordon Robertson Prize 2014 for his performance during his Masters studies and the Deans Prize for Best PhD Thesis 2018, both in LJMU’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
Following the submission of his PhD thesis (September 2017), Dr. Loughney joined LJMU as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant as a Co-Investigator on an Interreg project (ARCWIND) focusing on developing and testing a multiple-attribute decision-analysis methodology for site selection for floating offshore wind farms around the UK. During his PhD/Post-doc, Dr. Loughney also co-authored and contributed to three HSE books (currently awaiting publication):
- Loughney, S., Wang, J., Wall, A., (2018). “Ship/Platform collision incident database (2015)”, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
- Wall, A., Loughney, S., Ma, F., Wang, J., (2018). “Collision detection on the UKCS”, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
- Pemberton, K., Loughney, S., Wang, J., (2018) “Effective Collision Risk Management for Offshore Installations”, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
As well as his teaching responsibilities Dr. Loughney's research interests include the design, operation and safety of maritime engineering systems such as: ships, oil & gas installations and offshore renewable energy structures. As well as marine asset integrity monitoring and management.
