Professor Francis McGlone is the head of the Somatosensory & Affective Neuroscience Group at the School of Natural Sciences & Psychology, Liverpool JM University (https://somaffect.org/), and Professor in Neuroscience at LJMU. He is also Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool. His primary area of academic research is characterising the role of afferent c-fibres in humans, investigating their role in pain, itch (for which an IgNobel prize was awarded!), and more concertedly the functional and affective properties of a novel class of c-fibres - C-tactile afferents – hypothesised to code for the pleasure of intimate touch. Techniques used in this research span single unit recordings with microneurography, psychophysical measurements, functional neuroimaging, behavioural measures, and psychopharmacological approaches to investigate the role of the brain transmitter serotonin in affiliative and social touch.
The skin senses are a truly multisensory modality, with specific populations of cutaneous afferent nerve fibres coding for touch, temperature, pain, itch and ‘pleasure’. A research focus of the group is on the afferent c-fibres that transduce pain, itch and pleasant touch.
We are particularly interested in a recently discovered – in humans – population of mechanosensitive c-fibres that respond to ‘gentle stroking touch’. These nerves - called c-tactile afferents (CT) - have been characterised using psychophysical, microneurography and neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, EEG & PET). The lab is one of the first in the UK to have a single-unit microneurography and intraneural microstimulation (INMS) capability.
The Somatosensory & Affective Neuroscience Group (SANG) - http://somaffect.org/people/fpmcglone - is interested in the role of CTs in neurodevelopment and in aspects of social touch and have recently been awarded a Leverhulme Trust grant – ‘Affective Touch & Human Social Behaviour’ – employing two postdocs. We will study the role of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) in social touch and aim to determine i) how trait differences in sociability affect ratings of pleasant and unpleasant touch as mediated by CT afferents ii) explore whether exposure to affective social touch modulates social cognitions and behaviours iii) establish whether 5-HT differentially modulates perceptual, cognitive and behavioural responses to affective touch and iv) establish the neural basis of trait and state responses to affective touch.
A long term association with the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre (University of Nottingham) is using ultra-high-field fMRI (7T) to further explore the central representation of somatosensory inputs to the brain. A pioneering development here is to couple INMS, during microneurography on single mechanosensitive afferents, with concurrent fMRI acquisition. This is enabling us to study cortical representation at the single untui level and somatosensory cortical dynamics.
Postdocs:
Dr Paula Trotter - Leverhulme Trust, 5-HT & affective touch investigation
Dr Ralph Pawling - Leverhulme Trust, 5-HT & affective touch investigation .
PhD Students:
A CASE BBSRC award from GSK is focussing on a fuller understanding and characterisation of the neural and behavioural mechanisms engaged during oral sensory processing (Sharon Smith).
A PhD studentship from the Pain Relief Foundation (UoL) is studying peripheral pain mechanisms with microneurography, characterising the function of myelinated and unmyelinated afferents in normal and neuropathic nerves (Adarsh Makdani).
A PhD studentship has been awarded Dr Andy Marshall (Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist) via a matched-funding scheme between LJMU and Salford NHS Trust to study c-tactile afferents using microneurography.

Professor Francis McGlone from Natural Sciences and Psychology along with members of the British Psychological Society, discussed how they want schools to change their attitudes towards physical contact with students. In particular, they have called for schools to explain to parents that touch is not only necessary, but an integral part of the teacher-pupil relationship. This received international coverage including The TES The Daily Telegraph , Yahoo News The Mail Online The Times, The Independent and Schools Improvement.
https://www.tes.com/news/school-news/breaking-news/exclusive-refusing-touch-pupils-a-form-child-abuse-psychologists-say, Times Educatinal Supplement 17th Feb No 5236 The demonisation of touch. Touch plays a vital role in children’s brain development, according to Professor Francis McGlone, head of affective neuroscience at Liverpool John Moores University. “Touch isn’t just good – it’s absolutely essential,” he said. “Denying it is like denying a child oxygen. I get very exercised about the demonisation of touch. It’s cruel, in my mind. It’s another form of abuse. “The scientific evidence is incontrovertible. I’m not just talking psychononsense; I’m talking about proper, evidenced neuroscience.” Physical contact between teachers and pupils is not currently illegal. Government guidelines state that there are occasions “when physical contact…with a pupil is proper and necessary” In practice, however, many schools, either explicitly or implicitly, discourage teachers from touching pupils..
