Angela Walton

Angie initially joined the faculty at Liverpool John Moores University as Dance Artist in Residence in 2005. She was appointed as the artistic director of JMUpstart (performance & outreach), LJMU's undergraduate dance company JMUpstart dance company tour nationally and lead innovative projects. In developing this unique model of curriculum design in Higher Education the dance team was awarded financial support by the Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning at LJMU to run the project JMUpstart. Her teaching focuses on Dance Making/Improvisation, performance, Studio Practice and Community Dance. Her research to date has focused on curriculum innovation in relation to the employability of undergraduate dance student using JMUpstart as a model and approaches in assessing creativity. Her research interest focuses on integrating somatic principles within improvisation, studio practice, dance making and performance. This has led her to pursue further development encompassing Feldenkrais Method within her practice. Angie set up the PATCH project in Liverpool in 2006. It was her aspiration to enable dance to empower and inspire individuals with the opportunity to be a part of an arts based project. She was very keen to make dance accessible to individuals who had been excluded from main stream education and homeless individuals. The PATCH project was set up to Widen the provision of creative & performance opportunities which will engage young people at risk of exclusion in a range of inclusive artistic activities. It also aims to facilitate a work related learning experience for undergraduate dance students focusing on the philosophy, principles and practice of community dance.
The PATCH performances have been devised and performed in various environments. Disused warehouse, Night club, Sudley Theatre and in Sefton park. Angie has performed extensively as a member of Transitions and has enjoyed working with diverse artists Claude Brumchon (Europe), Merissa Zonetti, Lea-Anderson, Duncan McFarland (USA) and Karen Greenough. She has previously been a member of faculty at Trinity Laban and created works for London Studio Centre, Millennium and Lewisham College. She was a member of Rambert Dance Company’s Education for over 10 years, Angie led many of their innovative projects collaborating with London Symphonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet and London Musici.
