Biography

Andy Young did his first degree at Heriot Watt University where he gained a 1st Class Hons in Marine Biology in 1981. He moved to Liverpool later that year to start his PhD studies at the University of Liverpool, obtaining his PhD in 1984. After a year working for the Nature Conservancy Council in Scotland, he returned to Liverpool to complete two postdoc positions followed by a short postdoc with the University of Sheffield. He finally obtained a proper job as a lecturer at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University) in 1989.

His main research interest, resulting from work carried out in his last two postdoc positions and for 15 years as a researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, was the biological function of the carotenoid group of natural pigments (especially in photosynthesis) and he has published > 110 papers and book chapters, edited 2 books, ~90 conference presentations and attracted > £2m of external research funding on this topic.

Before returning to the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University in 2015 as Professor of Applied Plant Sciences, Andy was the University's Director of Research & Innovation Services for more than 10 years. During that time he was responsible for developing and then supporting the delivery of the research strategy, managing the Graduate School and securing research, business and knowledge exchange funding for the institution. He was also responsible for the institutional submissions to RAE2008 and REF2014.

In addition to his continued interests on carotenoids, his previous role has brought about an opportunity to explore another area of interest. He now studies the genus Conophytum (dwarf succulents from Southern Africa) and specifically aims to understand how the various species in the genus adapt to environmental stress, including climate change. The field work associated with this work has helped inform the Red Data Book of endangered species and resulted in the discovery of several species of plant new to science (5 of these have now been formally described).

Andy Young's research outputs have been cited more than 8,650 times. His H-index is currently 47 (Google Scholar) and he has an i10-index of 90 (Google Scholar).
