Rod has spent all his working life on Merseyside and was Managing Director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport for over ten years until his retirement. Prior to that he had worked in both public and private sectors, holding senior positions in local government and industry. Rod is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and past National President. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

Rod has also been involved as Chair or as non-executive Director in various organisations on Merseyside over many years. A particular interest is in the welfare of young people, reflected in his Chairmanship of GMCP Ltd (a Greater Manchester Company which provides independent advice, guidance and support to disadvantaged young people aged 13-19). He has also been a Governor (and Chair of the Governing Board) of a sixth form college in St Helens for over twenty years.

In addition, Rod has been Chair of Mersey Tourism, Deputy Chair of Knowsley and St Helens NHS Hospitals Trust and a Board member of Villages Housing Association (a joint private/public sector initiative of Michael Heseltine's when he was Minister for Merseyside).
