Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement)

Edward’s primary responsibilities are to provide academic leadership for:  

  • Institutional partnerships
  • Civic and community engagement
  • International relations
  • Marketing and recruitment
  • Business and employer engagement
  • Alumni relations and development  

Edward also provides academic leadership for:

  • Arts & cultural partners
  • Off-shore offices and partnerships
  • Corporate charities
  • Media relations    

Edward Harcourt sits on the Strategic Management Team of the University and is a member of Academic Board and attends Board of Governors.   As one of three Pro-Vice-Chancellors he represents the Vice-Chancellor on all academic appointment panels and works closely with the Faculty Deans and School Directors in realising the strategy of the University.   

Edward chairs the following Committees and Working Groups:  

  • International Policy Committee
  • Social & Economic Engagement Committee
  • Arts & Cultural Partners Working Group
  • Corporate Charities Working Group  

Edward’s international focus is South East Asia, India and North America.   

He is a Trustee of the Northern Consortium and a Member of the Board of Directors of NCUK.  

Short Biography  

A graduate of the Lancaster University, Dr Edward Harcourt began his career in publishing at Oxford University Press (New York) and administration at the New York Academy of Sciences.   

He has subsequently had a blended career in academia and university administration. He took his PhD in History from Vanderbilt University in the United States and has published in some of the leading historical journals in the U.S.  After lecturing at Vanderbilt, the University of Leicester and the University of Warwick, he joined the University of Warwick in 2003 as an Assistant Registrar. He later became Head of Institutional Relations and Interim Director of the International Office at Warwick. Between 2009-12, Dr Harcourt was the Director of International Relations at the University of Birmingham.  

He took up his position at LJMU in June 2013 and has a broad portfolio covering civic and public engagement, marketing and communications, business and employer engagement, alumni relations, development and international relations.
