Funding for your business idea and start-up

We've given over £1 million of funding to start-ups

We know that one of the biggest barriers to starting a business is money. That’s why we offer three funding opportunities – the Bathgate Start-Up Fund, the Try It Out Award and the Start-Up Fund.

Bathgate Start-Up Fund

£3,000 scholarship

Every year we award scholarships of £3,000 to 10 students who choose to dedicate their sandwich year to starting a new venture.

We welcome applications from individuals, as well as from groups.

If you were successful in your application, the funding would be paid into your bank account on a monthly basis over a six-month period. To continue to receive the funding, you would need to meet agreed business milestones.

Try It Out Award

£250 seed funding

The Try It Out Award is a pot of money for current students who are looking to research their idea or trial their idea. Hannah Rubix, for example, used the Try It Out Award to run her first Liverpool breakdance event. The dance session exceeded Hannah’s expectations, reaching full capacity and returning a profit.

The maximum amount awarded is £250 and the money is intended as initial seed funding.

Not sure whether you should apply for the Try It Out Award? We really encourage you to give it a shot. Here are a few things you should know if you’re considering applying:

  • We’re open to all business ideas, in any area or industry
  • Your idea doesn’t have to be related to your area of study
  • We’re looking for the potential in your idea
  • In your application, convince us you’re ready to take your idea to the next level
  • We’re searching for students who are enthusiastic about their idea

If you meet this criteria, we’d love to hear from you.
