How to book an appointment
The Careers, Employability and Enterprise Team is currently operating a virtual service via telephone and video conference appointments, from 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
We’re here to support our students and graduates whatever stage of your journey you’re at. You can take advantage of 30 minute, one-to-one appointments with our Advisers via Microsoft Teams or telephone. For help using Microsoft Teams, click here (current students only).
Who will my appointment be with?
Your appointment will be with an adviser from the Careers, Employability and Enterprise team. Use the information below to book an appointment.
Starting your own business or freelancing
For any students or graduates who are interested in setting up their own business, scaling up their business or freelancing, or just want to explore a business idea, email email@example.com.
Information you will need to book an appointment
Online booking is currently available for appointments booked at short notice - within 48 hours of the date and time of the appointment. These appointments are available to discuss certain careers topics - see 'Book an appointment at short-notice (with 48 hours)' below. Appointments slots that are 48 hours or further away can be booked by emailing or telephoning us, for both students and graduates. If you are booking by email or telephone, please have the following information to hand to enable us to process your request in a timely manner:
- Your student number. If you are a graduate and you still know your LJMU student number, please state this when you email/telephone.
- Full name
- Contact telephone number (and permission to send SMS reminder)
- The nature of your enquiry (e.g. 'CV check' or 'Discuss career options' etc),
- Some dates and times you are available
- What year of study you are in (current students) or the year you graduated
- What programme you are studying/studied
- Supporting documentation relevant to your appointment (CVs, cover letters, application forms, personal statements, job descriptions, person specification etc.). Email this documentation to firstname.lastname@example.org in advance of your appointment.
- Details of any additional support you may require during your appointment
If possible, current students are asked to email appointment requests via your LJMU email account.
What to expect from an appointment with an adviser and how to prepare
Rest assured when you attend an appointment with one of our friendly and professionally-trained Advisers, we don’t expect you to have a fully-formed career plan (or indeed any career plan!) or know exactly what your next steps should be.
All appointments are confidential so you can discuss any questions and queries freely with us.
We will adapt our advice to suit whatever stage of your career journey you are at, and part of that could include signposting you to resources and colleagues for further help.
All we expect from you is to complete some short activities before your appointment, tailored to and appropriate for your specific query, and to prepare some notes of key questions or points to go through with the Adviser. This will not only help you to make the most of your time with the Adviser and take a big step forward with your current queries, but will also benefit you in the long term to develop into an independent job seeker and applicant, a key skill for moving up the career ladder throughout your professional working life.
Some of the most popular areas we are asked for help with concern CVs, application forms or interviews. Before booking an appointment to talk about one of these topics, particularly if this is your first experience of them, we strongly recommend you work through the pathways we have created on these subjects in Careers Zone 24/7. They are a great starting point, and will ensure you are fully prepared and are able to make the most of an appointment:
If your meeting is to discuss careers options with your degree, talk about postgraduate possibilities, how to gain work experience in a specific area or relates to changing or discontinuing your course, read this document about how to make the most of your appointment prior to the meeting.
At the start of the appointment, we will discuss your aims for the meeting and what to focus on. The notes and discussion points you have prepared and the activities you completed before the appointment will both be helpful for this. At the end of your meeting, you will agree on and set some action points with your Adviser, so you are clear about the steps you need to take in order to progress. After your appointment, you will receive a short follow-up email summarising your action points and, where relevant, signposting you to additional resources. You will also be asked to complete a short online evaluation to help us continue to improve our service to students.

Appointments are available at short-notice (within 48 hours of the appointment) to discuss to the following topics:
- looking for and applying for work experience, voluntary work, internships and graduate jobs
- CVs and covering letters, application forms and personal statements
- preparing for job assessments and interviews
- supporting you with applications for postgraduate study, teaching and research.

To cancel an appointment
If you are no longer able to make this appointment, please cancel it as soon as possible so that we can free up this slot for another student. To do this, click here and 'Cancel Registration' via the 'My Bookings' tab. Alternatively email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 0151 231 2048/3719. You can arrange another appointment either online or by using the contact details listed above.

Appointments in a Careers Zone
Under normal circumstances, as well as telephone and video appointments, one-to-one appointments would also be available in our campus-based Careers Zones (at the Student Life Building and Byrom Street).
However, in light of current guidelines, we are currently only offering face-to-face appointments at a Careers Zone in exceptional circumstances. Speak to our front of house staff on booking an appointment and we will endeavour to help find a suitable solution.
