Cultural programme

Voted one of the top ten cities to visit in the world, Liverpool is the perfect place to spend your summer.

A port city in the North West of England, Liverpool is packed full of culture and history and boasts more green spaces, theatres and museums than any other UK city outside of London.

During the International Summer School at LJMU, you will have plenty of free time to explore and make the most of everything this vibrant city has to offer. There will also be a wide range of cultural activities included in the programme giving you the opportunity to explore Liverpool and further afield.

Liverpool City and Cathedral tour

‘If you want a Cathedral, we’ve got one to spare...’ so goes the Liverpool folk song. The Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King are located at either end of Hope Street, in the Georgian Quarter. They are vastly different in architecture but are equally majestic and beautiful. During your first day here in Liverpool, you will take a walking tour of the city, stopping off at both cathedrals.

Chatsworth House

Chatsworth House is one of England’s most famous stately homes. It is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has 105 acres of gardens to explore and 30 beautiful rooms to admire, and is famously featured in the film adaption of ‘Pride and Prejudice’. During the programme, you will visit both the house and gardens, finishing the day off with a traditional English Afternoon Tea.

Chester

The nearby ancient city of Chester boasts a 1000-year-old Cathedral with Europe’s finest examples of medieval carvings, and is a city known for its city walls dating back to Roman times. However, as well as being a city full of history, it is also perfect for lovers of shopping.

Alnwick Castle

Harry Potter fans may recognise Alnwick Castle* from Harry, Ron and Hermione’s flying lessons and Quidditch matches. You can step inside the wizarding world for yourself on this optional trip to Alnwick Castle.

As a fully registered LJMU student, you will be have complete access to all academic and wellbeing facilities and services. You will also have access to LJMU Student opportunities, meaning you will also be entitled to exclusive free or discounted access to many of Liverpool’s best sporting and cultural venues and events.
