Smartphones, Tablets & Activesync

What is Exchange ActiveSync

Exchange ActiveSync is a communications protocol that enables over-the-air mobile access to email messages, scheduling, contacts, and tasks. Exchange ActiveSync is available on devices such as Windows Phones, Apple Devices (iPhones, iPad), and Google Devices (Android).

LJMU provide an Activesync server for all users - this is free, there is no cost for you to use this so you can synchronise your email, calendar and contacts from anywhere in the world.

If you have a large list of addresses & phone numbers in Outlook or on your phone already, Activesync is a great way of getting these altogether and keeping them safe so you will never lose any important mobile numbers.

LJMU ActiveSync Server - Standard instructions for all devices:

When setting up your device the terms for each phone may vary, e.g. Microsoft Exchange / ActiveSync or EAS (Exchange ActiveSync Server) account.

Enter the following information for all devices.

  • Server name:
  • Domain name: USERS (if prompted)
  • Email address: e.g. (for staff) for students.
  • Then you will need to enter your normal LJMU username and password.

On most devices, you can choose separately to sync just your email, your calendar or your contacts or a combination of all three.

You can also choose to sync when new mail arrives (push email), e.g. every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, every day. These settings can affect the battery life of your device though, so choose the most appropriate options suitable for your device.

NB. If using a mobile phone or SIM/ 3g based device, always check your data costs first. Using data can be expensive if not pre-agreed with your provider especially when abroad. If you are unsure about this, use a wireless network like eduroam if available, especially when setting up a new device up the first time.

Activesync for iPhone / iPad

To configure your iPhone or iPad to use Activesync

On the home screen, choose:

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.

From the Add Account list, select (Microsoft) Exchange

You will need to enter your email address, username, password and a description. This will then try and autoconfigure the settings but will fail and then ask for more details as below.

Smartphone Login

When prompted, enter:

Domain: users

Description: (this is what you will see the account listed as in all dialog boxes)

Once the iPhone/iPad has confirmed connectivity, you will be required to select which folders to synchronize. By default Email, Contacts, and Calendars are selected.

Once you save this information, the device will begin to synchronize.

You can go back into the account settings to configure additional options, such as the number of days for synchronization.

ActiveSync for Android Devices Google

Many phones & tablets run Google's Android operating system, e.g. Samsung Galaxy S8, S9, Google Pixel.

Follow the ‘Standard instructions for all devices’ above to configure your mail. You will be required to provide your email address & password.

Choose manual setup; configure the server to and domain name to Users as above.

There are many different versions of Android so it is difficult to provide exact instructions for each model and manufacturer. Instructions below for Samsung should be similar on all.

On newer devices, you will receive a security request to allow ActiveSync to access your phone or tablet, and be able to access certain features on it.
