LJMU has a proud reputation for sport from the iconic physical education programmes developed at IM Marsh, to world leading sport science programmes developed at Liverpool Polytechnic under Professor Tom Riley.
The University is now going through some major changes with the closure of the IM Marsh Campus and the development of exciting new facilities at Copperas Hill. The higher education landscape has changed dramatically over the last few years. The new £14m Sports Centre is a significant investment by the University in sports facilities for students and staff. The new programmes and facilities will also help develop a sense of community and will assist in preparing students for life beyond university.
A new Sport Strategy has been developed that will link into the strategic plans in Estates, the Students Union, Professional Services and the Faculties. This will ensure a coordinated approach to the development of facilities and programmes that will result in an excellent sport service for all users. There will be new programmes available on a daily basis to increase fitness, health and well-being. There will also be an emphasis on increasing the number of competitive student sports teams at the University.
The new Sports Centre, opening in July 2021, will be at the heart of linking the Campuses within the city. The facilities will host the academic teaching of sports courses, research projects, student teams, recreational sport, staff wellbeing activities, community sport and external groups. In addition, the new facilities could be used for non-sports events such as Fresher’s Fayre, Career Fayres, Open Days, examinations as well as conferences in the vacations.
The Active LJMU team sits within the Estates and Facilities Management department of LJMU. The team is made up individuals with a vast amount of experience skills and qualifications in higher education sport, the leisure industry and sport governing bodies including BUCS, UKActive and Sport England. The team is committed to ensuring that all of the LJMU community is given an opportunity to use the new LJMU Sports Centre.
