LJMU staff and students
LJMU academic staff, researchers, postgraduates, and undergraduates can use this service, as long as the item requested is related to their area of study or research.
Partner College staff and students
Unfortunately we are not able to offer ILLs to students or staff from our Partner Colleges. You should contact your own institution's library service to see if they can obtain materials for you. Alternatively your local public library may be able to help.
The service is free of charge for all users.
You will only be able to place an inter-library loan request if we do not have access to a physical or electronic copy of the material within LJMU Libraries.
Go to Find a Reference and select Article, Book or Journal.
Fill in the form with as much detail as possible. When you click Submit you will be prompted to sign in for more options. Once signed in you may place an Inter Library Loan request.
Depending on what material you request, we need the following information:
- Journal article - ISSN, journal title, the relevant year, the volume and/or part number, page numbers, article author and article title.
- Book - ISBN, surname and initials of the author(s) and/or editor(s), full title, publisher, date of publication
- Book chapter - as Book but we also need the chapter title, author and page numbers
- Thesis - author's name, title of thesis, type and date of degree and the awarding University details
Most UK doctoral theses are available to download free of charge from the British Library Electronic Theses Online Service - EThOS. ILL requests should normally only be submitted for Masters theses.
- Conference paper - conference title, date and venue of the conference, sponsor, author of paper and title
All requests
Source of reference (details of the book, bibliography, journal article or webpage from which you took the details about your request)
We aim to process your inter-library loan request within one working day and we aim to satisfy 80% within three weeks. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a supply time as this is outside our control.
We will post photocopies to your home or departmental address. These copies are for you to keep.
Books
We will send you an email when your book has arrived. Please allow two working days before going to the library to collect the item. You can normally borrow inter-library loans for six weeks, but this can vary depending on the supplying library or if it is recalled for another reader.
Theses
If an original copy is supplied, you will have to consult the item in the Library. It will be kept for you at the Hub and will be available at any time during staffed hours.
Library-use only
A few inter-library loan items can only be used in the library. These items will be kept for you at the Hub and will be available at any time during staffed hours.
Renewing your inter-library Loan
Inter-library loans can normally be renewed up to three times. You will be notified if an item may not be renewed or if it is recalled for another reader. Please ask at the library, or contact the Document Supply team: tel. 0151 231 3734, or via email on lis-interloans@ljmu.ac.uk
Returning your inter-library loan
Please return your inter-library loan item to the library Hub by the due date. Lost items and late returns may incur British Library charges of up to £179 (plus VAT).
EThOS - Electronic Theses Online Service provides access to UK doctoral theses. To read or download theses, you must first register with EThOS and accept the terms and conditions of use.
If the thesis you require is already available in full-text you will be able to download it immediately free of charge.
If it is not available, you will be able to request it through EThOS who will try to obtain and digitise it for you. You will be notified when the digital version is available for download.
Sometimes you will be asked to fund the digitisation of a thesis if you are the first requester. Once a thesis has been digitised it is available for free download thereafter.
If the thesis cannot be made available electronically, please submit an inter-library loan request for it.
