MA Social Work graduate Joseph wins prestigious national award

Joseph graduated from our MA Social Work programme in November 2017. In the same month, he was announced as the Silver Award winner for Social Work Student of the Year at the Social Work Awards ceremony. The annual Awards recognise students who perform above expectations in both their practical placements and in their understanding of the theory behind social work practice.

"I am delighted that Joe has won the Silver Award and very proud of him," says Professor Raphaela Kane, now Pro-Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Health. "You do not need to spend much time with Joe to know that he is a special guy and is going to be both a truly great advocate for the vulnerable people in his care and a great asset to his profession."

Joe had previously completed an MA in Politics at the University of Liverpool, and his interest in social work was sparked by personal experience. He started his two-year, full-time Masters in Social Work at LJMU in September 2015.

Joe had social care experience before applying for the MA  - working for three years as a music therapy workshop support worker for Mencap and volunteering with Student Action for Refugees.

During his MA study, Joe completed a 70 day placement with the ADHD Foundation, Liverpool, and a 100 day placement during his second year at Liverpool City Council, working with an Adult Neighbourhood Social Care Team. Joe is currently using the skills and knowledge he developed during his MA as a registered social worker for a local authority.
