The e-Health Research Group focuses on investigating issues related to technology’s use in supporting healthcare practice. Due to the quality research the Group undertakes, members of the e-Health Research Group have established an international reputation in the following research areas related to health:

Collaborations are important to the group. Consequently, researchers from the Group have formed national and international partnerships, including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (UK), Merseycare NHS Foundation Trust (UK), Aintree University Hospital (UK), University of Aberdeen (UK), Seville University (Spain), LISITE Laboratory (France), KU Leuven (Belgium) and Passau University (Germany).

The group benefits from undertaking research in a variety of areas and has an excellent track record of obtaining external funding from EPSRC, HEFCE, Royal Academy of Engineering, Innovate UK, Knowledge Transfer Partnership, North West Regional Innovation Fund and Bupa. For instance, one project that was funded by EPSRC [Grant Ref: EP/M029484/1] was a cross-disciplinary project that focused on the design and implementation of a mobile lifelogging platform to measure the effects negative emotion has on cardiovascular health in everyday life. This was a collaborative project between the Department of Computer Science and the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University.

Members of the group have also conducted research with Merseycare NHS Foundation Trust that is looking at the use of smart meters to detect activities of daily living in people living alone with Dementia by monitoring the use of home appliances to model habitual behaviours for early intervention practices and safe independent living at home.

In other works, during FP7, members of the group were also involved in the MyHealthAvatar project (No: 600929). This project involved developing data collection utilities to support data contribution from users with minimal input, building a data repository to store health related data of individual citizens collected from the web and mobile apps, and experimenting the linked data approach to facilitate the flourish and reuse of data, including data search and reasoning. Additionally, the EPSRC funded project MyLifeHub [Grant Ref: EP/L023830/1], involved research investigating new techniques enabling simultaneously and long-term quantifying the functional impairment related to vision underpinned with smart glasses; designing a platform to assess the impact of visual impairment on the QoL of ophthalmic patients both in general health terms and in vision specific terms; studying and proposing the data mining techniques for analysing and exploring the lifelogging data.

Additionally, numerous refereed research papers have been published in the healthcare domain in collaboration with European and international partners/institutions including, to name but a few, Lyon 1 University (France), Seville University (Spain), LISITE Laboratory (France), State University of Navi Pazar (Serbia), Innopolis University (Russia), and Zayed University (UAE).
