What to expect as a PhD student

PROTECT’s PhD students have access to excellent research facilities, including specialist laboratories with state-of-the-art hardware and software, a stimulating working environment, and an excellent student support and supervision structure.

As a PhD student, you can expect to benefit from PROTECT’s relationships with organisations. For example, PROTECT offers research support, consultancy services, short course activities and knowledge transfer schemes to local, regional and national industries. PROTECT has worked, in this capacity, with organisations from a range of sectors, including: healthcare, IT, transport and the entertainment sector. These relationships will help you gain excellent industrial input into your research.

The Centre also has a number of international collaborative partnerships with other academic institutions in countries such as: Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the USA. These partnerships provide PROTECT’s PhD students with active research and development opportunities. In addition to this, staff and students widely disseminate their research findings through participation at key international research gatherings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

After completion of their research degrees, many students pursue careers in academic institutions, whilst others take important roles in industrial organisations.
