Expertise within fracture and contact mechanics

MEMARC's researchers have substantial experience and expertise in the development and use of finite element structural and multi-physics packages.

As part of this work, the researchers use state-of-the-art software to complete structural analyses that have industrial applications. For example, the research team have contributed to the development of standard design codes and undertaken critical theoretical assessments of such codes.

In addition to this, researchers within this specialist area are developing a computational capability to quantify the extent of wear damage occurring in metal-on-metal hip prostheses. Researchers are also identifying the factors that lead to debris release. Findings from this work will be used to inform design and procedural modifications, which may increase the life of the prosthetic device.

Recently, MEMARC’s fracture and contact mechanics’ researchers have studied fracture in composites and metamaterials using modern analytical techniques. The Centre’s researchers have also analysed micro-structured materials and lattices to determine the effect of the microstructure on crack growth rates. Mechanical and thermal loads have also both been assessed.

Theoretical studies in thermoelastic fracture has been a long-standing and world-leading strength of MEMARC. The developed technology of predicting crack growth in nuclear reactor components has been applied in other sectors. For example, the very latest theoretical models developed by MEMARC examine the use of cloaking technology in controlling heat transfer.
