The Network and Information Security Technology Research Group is engaged in computer and network security research. 

Members of the Group also develop solutions to real-world security challenges and the majority of the Group’s research results in deployable software, either as research prototypes or usable products. The Network and Information Security Technology Research Group has a well-established, international reputation for its research in the following areas:

  • Cyber Security Teaching and Learning

In the latest research assessment (Research Excellence Framework 2021), 80% of our research outputs (or publications) and 75% of our research impact were rated as being world leading or internationally excellent.

One of the Network and Information Security Technology Research Group’s key pieces of research is VIBRANT. For this £130,000 Higher Education Academy funded project, researchers developed a learning platform that allows training scenarios to be deployed to Cloud servers. This project has enabled students to apply practical network security tools in real-world, industry-specified configurations.

Another key project for the Network and Information Security Technology Research Group is Aniketos – a €9.6 million European Union (FP7-ICT) funded project that produced a series of reports detailing secure service composition techniques. The researchers, who worked with 17 partners across the European Union, also assessed the applicability of the approaches for real-world use and developed an open source toolchain that has been used by SELEX Elsag and SAP within their software security processes. In addition to this, the Group’s digital forensics training and software has been used by England’s Cybercrime Centre of Excellence Network for Training Research and Education, as part of a ISEC (Prevention of and Fight against Crime) €900 000 project.
