Creative writing

Explore our research

Members of the Institute are also engaged in critical and creative research in poetry and poetics, prose fiction, creative nonfiction, short stories, genre writing, radio drama and writing for the stage, memoir and travel writing. Their creative research takes the form of novels, poetry collections, BBC radio documentary-dramas, short story collections, memoirs, plays and performances. It has been published and performed in the UK through a wide range of international publishing houses, online or in performance spaces. The fusion of critical and creative enquiry is key to our research. It may follow traditional historical or cultural methodologies, pose questions about practice and creative approach or use innovative creative techniques to explore ideas underpinning writing. In addition to their creative practice, staff have published critical work on a range of topics including fashion in fiction, Vietnamese culture and writing, poetics, modernist writers Anais Nin and Malcolm Lowry, the Irish short story, feminism and crime writing, and the teaching of creative writing. Shared themes are place, nation, home and refuge.
