Prisons and punishment

About our research

Research undertaken by CCSE members of the Prisons and Punishment Research Group raises critical questions about the role of the modern prison in deeply divided societies like the UK. It focuses on the failure of the prison to fulfil any of its official goals, particularly around rehabilitation. The research and writing by CCSE members is concerned with highlighting radical alternatives to prisons and replacing the ethos of punishment and pain which governs them and to develop alternative policy responses to incarceration which will reducer recidivism, prevent victimisation and secure public protection.
