Woman and man in park

Ageing study

Help us to understand the effect of ageing on blood vessel health in women

What is the purpose of the study?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a huge problem for women but little is known about the cardiovascular changes which occur in women that precede CVD. Hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle) and chronic changes (menopause) which occur naturally in women are known to be involved in the regulation of cardiovascular system. Additionally, the increase in the incidence of obesity among women, as well as a greater number of women living for longer means more and more women are living with CVD. A greater understanding of the impact of normal hormonal influences, obesity and ageing on artery structure and function in healthy females could play a major role in understanding how CVD develops. The aim of this research project is to identify the structural and functional characteristics of the arteries within a female population.
