Profile:
Mel joined the LDF team in January 2019. Prior to this she worked within the Research and Innovation Services department as a Communications Manager, Engagement Lead and Researcher Developer Lead. Mel advises on the university-wide researcher development offer and is the Programme Leader for ACTivator, the University’s Researcher Development Programme which she created in 2016. Mel sits on the University’s Ethics Committee and co-chairs the Concordat Forum.
Mel has over 20 years’ experience as a communication and facilitation specialist. Prior to joining LJMU in 2008, Mel was Training Manager at an FE College and worked charities for 10+ years, supporting visioning, strategic planning, team development, impact reporting and fundraising. Mel has also managed projects, partnerships and people in a wide range of Private and Public Sector organisations, winning new and repeat business, generating income and securing commitment and enthusiasm for projects in a range of professional settings.
With a background in psychology and individual and group development, Mel is a qualified Personal Coach and has 20+ years’ experience of designing and delivering individual and group development interventions. Mel completed the Aurora Women’s Leadership Development Programme in 2016.
Mel is also co-delivering TRANSPEER, a Transnational Project to Enhance Researcher Employability, working in partnership with the following Universities:
• Inland Norway University of Applied Science
• Karlstad University, Sweden (Coordinator)
• New University of Lisbon, ITQB NOVA, Portugal
• Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, Portugal
The TRANSPEER project takes as its starting point the pan-European problem of researcher employability. At present, research skills, largely derived from publicly-funded research degrees and projects, are often not fully utilised by researchers, and, consequently, society at large fails to benefit optimally from its investment. Many researchers struggle to develop their potential within the academy, or to articulate their skills to non-academic employers and so their potential is not fully realised. TRANSPEER seeks to address this issue through the development of a transnationally-informed training programme, designed and delivered by the consortium partners.
In June Mel will be presenting on the need to/approaches for addressing the issue of resilience among the researcher community at the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) Annual Conference in Belfast, ‘New Horizons: Prosperity & Resilience in Research Management’.
