CPD Dementia Care
Level 6 (undergraduate), 20 Credits
One of the challenges for staff working in the NHS is the need to respond to an ageing population. As people are living longer this inevitably means that incidences of dementia have risen also.
Working with service users suffering from dementia is often challenging, particularly when symptoms take the form of behaviour that is difficult to manage. Great patience and sensitivity is needed when dealing both with patients and their significant others.
This course will enable you to evaluate programmes of care for individuals with a diagnosis of dementia. You will also be able to critically analyse the care delivered to individuals with a diagnosis of dementia, recognising the need for mental health promotion of service users, carers and families.
Directed, individual and group learning activities will reflect on the care of people living with dementia, particularly around living well with dementia.
The following topic areas will provide a general learning framework for the module:
- Recognition and assessment of dementia, therapeutic interventions, evidence based care of the person living with dementia
- the ethical, legal and professional context
- service user and caregiver issues
- care co-ordination
Teaching and learning
The course is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including:
- problem-based learning
- group tutorials
- self-directed study
You will also take part in sessions designed to help you make the connection between the academic content of the course and its practical application.
This Dementia Care course runs for 14 weeks, attendance is required throughout the module. Some learning material will be available through the Canvas virtual learning environment.
You must have:
- evidence of successful study at Level 5
- students are also accepted onto the programme as part of the international top up degrees for nurses and paramedics
In order to be successful in this module, students must pass the theoretical competencies. The final module mark will be the theoretical assessment mark.
The assessment is a 4500 word essay, linked to the student’s journey in the specialist area of dementia care.
This Continuing Professional Development programme can be studied within the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Development award framework or as a single CPD.
