Course aim

To enable general practice nurses (GPNs) to maximise learning opportunities and experiences relevant to their own area of work, in order to facilitate career and professional development. 

The programme is intended for practitioners who are new to, or within a year of starting, the role of practice nurse.

Course content

This is a student-negotiated programme which combines taught sessions and student-led learning (which may include work-based and distance learning). 

You will be supported to identify your knowledge and existing skills in relation to the GPN competency framework and create an action plan for professional and academic development.

Content includes:

  • an introduction to work based learning and General Practice Nurse competence frameworks
  • law and ethics
  • technology in general practice
  • skills for working in general practice
  • sexual health
  • reflection
  • supporting patients with long term conditions
  • motivational interviewing
  • mental health
  • immunisations/vaccinations
  • action planning and career mapping

Teaching and learning

The programme runs over one semester and consists of timetabled face-to-face sessions, self-directed and work-based learning. Support is provided via either tutorials, email or the virtual learning environment.

You will be required to attend taught sessions at Liverpool John Moores University, Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.30pm in the first week only. After that you do not have to attend as the majority of this course will be distance learning.

Entry requirements

You must be a registered nurse, working in a general practice setting, in order to be considered for this course.

Assessment

The Level 6 Fundamentals of General Nursing programme is assessed via portfolio.

CPD award

This Continuing Professional Development module is stand-alone and is not within a wider award framework.
