Translating your academic studies into essential professional experience

Projects supported by employers in the field are an important element of this degree course as they allow you to apply what you have learnt to real-life situations. However, the best way to put your skills and knowledge into practice is to undertake a year’s work placement between Levels 5 and 6. We strongly recommend that you take up this opportunity, as professional work experience and references, together with your degree, will significantly boost your career prospects. In fact some of our students have been offered employment before the end of their final year. However, we should point out that although we may be able to find a suitable post for you, we cannot guarantee this, nor can we guarantee employment in a particular company or geographical area.

Support and guidance

Dedicated personal tutor plus study skills support

There is a high level of support for students on this course, particularly if you choose to undertake a work placement. The Department’s Industry Unit will help you to identify potential employers, both in the UK and overseas (though overseas placements are less common), and will support you during your placement, with occasional visits from a tutor to check on your progress. The Unit acts as a link between you and a large number of organisations that take part in our annual employers’ day and get involved in employer interest/support groups. Activities like these give you the best possible chance of securing a placement and making useful contacts for your future employment. 

Course details

'Real world' projects are integrated across all levels of this MEng degree for Building Services Engineering.

Modern living depends upon the engineering services that are an integral part of buildings, and these systems consume a significant percentage of the energy used in the UK. Building services engineers operate as part of a professional team alongside architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors and other construction professionals to ensure that buildings continue to function efficiently while de-carbonising the energy supply. They need to be technically competent and practical in outlook, but also good communicators as they give advice to a wide range of people.

This programme, which has been developed in partnership with practising professionals, helps you gain the skills required to design complicated building engineering systems that can control internal environmental conditions and minimise energy use, such as the heating, lighting, power, lifts, ventilation, water and utilities, as well as managing their installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Projects are integrated at all levels of the degree, with materials and supervision provided by employers so you can replicate real-life scenarios in your work. After your second year, you will be encouraged to take up a year’s paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor (subject to finding suitable placement).

During level 4, students gain the basic knowledge and theory of the Building Services Engineering discipline.  They gain an introduction to construction technology, engineering principles, science and materials, and mathematics.  Students will also undertake a building services design project and get involved in exciting collaborative interdisciplinary activities, as well as becoming skilled in academic and digital literacy.

During level 5, students further their knowledge and skills in mechanical and electrical engineering as well as mathematics, relating the key principles to building services systems.  This culminates in a major practical building services design project, as well as an interdisciplinary project which incorporates building information management (BIM), and students are encouraged to use industry standard building modelling software.  Students also study management techniques for the construction and building services industries further and are introduced to engineering research methods.

At the conclusion of level 5 students will have the option to take up a year's paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor.

During level 6, students focus on the issues of sustainability in building services design as well as environmental analysis.  Again these key concepts are utilised to complete integrative multi-disciplinary design projects.  Students will also further their learning in the area of project management techniques as well as undertaking a major engineering research project (dissertation).

At level 7, students focus again energy and the environment, commissioning and facilities management, and sensors and controls.  A major piece of research and design work completes the masters degree.

You can expect to spend on average 14-16 hours in the classroom which may be in the form of lectures, tutorials and workshops, combined with your own research using our library and the web. You should spend around 35 hours per week in private study.

Lecturers contributing to this course include specialist Building Services Engineers with practical experience in the industry, and a range of Built Environment professionals. Local Building Services consultant and contracting engineers provide occasional guest lectures and project supervision.

Assessment and feedback

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose

All students perform differently depending on how they are assessed which is why we use a combination of assessment methods. These include exams (open and closed book), coursework (projects, laboratory and technical reports) and oral presentations. Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via Blackboard (our virtual learning environment), face-to-face or in writing. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

Finance and fees

Different funding arrangements will apply if you are from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or other countries in the EU. If you normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland you will still be eligible for loans for tuition fees as well as grants and/or bursaries plus loans for living costs. It's just that the amounts available may be different to those stated here as these apply to applicants who live in England.

LJMU scholarships

LJMU's scholarships are open to all full-time Home and EU undergraduates that are liable to pay tuition fees. These awards are not income assessed, and if successful you will be awarded a scholarship for each year of your course worth between £1,000 and £10,000. This money does not need to be repaid and it's up to you to decide what you want to spend it on.

LJMU bursary

LJMU bursaries are means-tested, which means your household income must be below a certain level in order for you to qualify for this funding.

The money you receive does not have to be repaid and is intended to help you meet some of the costs associated with being a student. You will receive a bursary for each year of your course providing you still meet the eligibility criteria.

Tuition fees

In line with most universities, LJMU charges an annual tuition fee of £9,250 for most of our degrees.

If you opt to complete a foundation year as part of your degree, your first year tuition fee will be £7,700.

The important thing to remember is that you don't have to pay your tuition fees upfront when you enrol.

Instead you can take out a tuition fee loan, which doesn't have to be repaid until after you leave LJMU and start earning over the threshold. Currently the threshold is £21,000 for students resident in England.

As long as you have not been to University before and meet the residency rules both full and part-time students are eligible to apply for tuition fee loans.

Living costs

In addition to your tuition fees, eligible students can also choose to take out a maintenance loan for each year of your course to help you meet the costs of being a student.

The money will have to be paid back but only after you leave LJMU and starting earning over the income threshold, currently £21,000 for those resident in England.

Part-time students are not eligible to take out these loans.

Paying back your student loans

Any loans you take out while studying will be added together into one loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment. This monthly repayment will be the same regardless of how many loans you have taken out. That’s because your repayments are based on a percentage of your salary not how much you borrowed from the Student Loans Company.

The current threshold for students normally resident in England is £21,000. Once your income goes over this threshold your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance. If your income falls below £21,000 your repayments will stop.

Career prospects

There is a national shortage of well-trained building services engineers, so if you successfully complete this MEng course, you stand an excellent chance of gaining well-paid employment.

The majority of students on this programme are part-time and are already employed in the industry, though all recent full-time graduates have progressed to appropriate employment in the building services industry.

Opportunities exist with small and large national building services engineering consultancies and contractors, and also in the public sector with local authorities and government agencies. 

You could find yourself working as a consultant within a professional team or in contracting where you would develop consultants' schemes into working practical installations. Other possible roles include facilities managers or representatives for organisations that require engineering work, such as banks, hospitals and police forces.

International Scholarships

Please note: this programme is not suitable for students who require a Tier 4 visa. Due to immigration requirements, Tier 4 international students must study on a full-time basis.
