Translating your academic studies into essential professional experience
Projects supported by employers in the field are an important element of this degree course as they allow you to apply what you have learnt to real-life situations. However, the best way to put your skills and knowledge into practice is to undertake a year’s (48-week) work placement between Levels 5 and 6. We strongly recommend that you take up this opportunity, as professional work experience and references, together with your degree, will significantly boost your career prospects. However, we should point out that although we may be able to find a suitable post for you, we cannot guarantee this, nor can we guarantee employment in a particular company or geographical area.
Support and guidance
Dedicated personal tutor plus study skills support
There is a high level of support for students on this course, particularly if you choose to undertake a work placement. The Built Environment Industry Unit will help you to identify potential employers, both in the UK and overseas (though overseas placements are less common), and will support you during your placement, with occasional visits from a tutor to check on your progress.
The Unit acts as a link between you and a large number of organisations that take part in our annual employers’ day and get involved in employer interest/support groups. Activities like these give you the best possible chance of securing a placement and making useful contacts for your future employment.
Building services engineering encompasses heating, lighting, power, lifts, air conditioning and other services, each one being a self-contained discipline. Within a project, each of these disciplines will have their own priorities and targets.
As project manager, you would not only manage and liaise with the various engineering trades involved, you would also work closely with builders, architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, contractors and lawyers to ensure that all of the different technologies merge into one functional, efficient building - and all within the constraints of budget, time and quality.
Today, buildings account for nearly half of the total carbon released into the atmosphere from fossil fuels, so you would be tackling the challenge of climate change by translating design ideas into practical, operational - and low carbon - engineering systems. This is a professional role with great responsibility in high value contractual situations.
The course will give you the opportunity to develop these high levels of proficiency through challenging theoretical and practical work, including the option to do a year’s paid work experience with a building services engineering consultant or contractor (subject to finding a suitable placement).

During level 4, students gain the basic knowledge and theory of the Building Services Engineering discipline. They gain an introduction to construction technology, engineering principles, science and materials, and mathematics. Students will also undertake a building services design project and get involved in exciting collaborative interdisciplinary activities, as well as becoming skilled in academic and digital literacy.
During level 5, students further their knowledge and skills in mechanical and electrical engineering, relating the key principles to building services systems. This culminates in a major practical building services design project, as well as an interdisciplinary project which incorporates building information management (BIM), and students are encouraged to use industry standard building modelling software. Students also study contracts and procurement, together with management techniques for the construction and building services industries and are introduced to engineering research methods.
At the conclusion of level 5 students will have the option to take up a year's paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor.
During level 6, students focus on the issues of sustainability in building services design. Again these key concepts are utilised to complete integrative multi-disciplinary design projects. Students will also further their learning in the area of business and project management techniques as well as undertaking a major engineering research project (dissertation).

Teaching and learning
Excellent facilities and learning resources
Teaching will be in the form of lectures, tutorials and workshops, combined with your own research using our library and the web. You should spend around 35 hours per week in private study.
Expert tuition and support
Lecturers contributing to this course include specialist Building Services Engineers with practical experience in the industry, and a range of Built Environment professionals. Local Building Services consultant and contracting engineers provide occasional guest lectures and project supervision.
Assessment and feedback
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose
All students perform differently depending on how they are assessed, which is why we use a combination of assessment methods. These include exams (open and closed book), coursework (projects, laboratory and technical reports) and oral presentations. Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via Canvas (our virtual learning environment), face-to-face or in writing. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.Furthermore your graduate skills and World of Work Skills Certificate details will be published in your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), providing employers with extensive evidence of your development as a professional as well as your academic achievements at LJMU.

We are looking for people with a keen interest in the interaction of energy and human behaviour in buildings, a desire to improve the environment and be part of the solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems. Ideally a student will have good communication and problem solving skills, common sense, and will be self-starting and capable of working on their own, using their own initiative.
GCSE and equivalents
- In addition to obtaining 260 UCAS Tariff points, at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language and Mathematics are required.

Finance and fees

Please note that the amount of money you will receive as a student is dependent on where in the UK you normally live (i.e. England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland).
LJMU's scholarships are open to all new full-time Home and EU undergraduates that are liable to pay tuition fees. These awards are not income assessed, they are based on excellence. If successful, you will be awarded a scholarship for each year of your course subject to satisfactory progress. Scholarships are worth between £1,000 and £10,000 per year. The money you receive doesn’t have to be paid back.
The LJMU bursary is automatically paid to eligible students – you do not need to apply for it. The annual bursary is £500, which works out at £1,500 over a three year degree.
LJMU bursaries are means-tested and you don’t have to pay them back; they are intended to help you meet some of the costs associated with being a student.
In 2017 LJMU charged a tuition fee of £9,250* for the majority of its full time undergraduate programmes and £6,935 per year for its part time courses. You will be charged a fee for each year of your course. The University reserves the right to increase fees up to the maximum permitted by law or government policy in the second and subsequent years of your course. Generally, these fee increases are linked to RPIX inflation (Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
The important thing to remember is that you don't have to pay your tuition fees upfront - subject to meeting eligibility criteria, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course.
You can also take out a maintenance or living cost loan for each year of your course to cover your living expenses, such as rent and food.
You don’t start repaying your student loans until after you’ve left university and start earning at least £21,000.**

Living expenses (maintenance) loan
In addition to your tuition fees, eligible full-time undergraduate students can also apply for a maintenance loan to cover your living costs. If you’re eligible, you can take out a loan for each year of your course.
The amount you’ll receive will depend on where in the UK you normally live and your household income. This money will be paid into your bank or building society account in three instalments and it’s up to you to budget for your living costs.
The government has stated that it intends to introduce a pro rata maintenance loan for part time students from England from the 2018/19 academic year.

Paying back your student loans
You only start repaying your student loans the April after you have graduated or left university and start earning £21,000* or above. Repayments are based on a percentage of your salary not how much you have borrowed from the Student Loans Company. Repayments are currently set at 9% of any income over the threshold (which is currently set at £21,000).*

There is a national shortage of well-trained building services engineering professionals, so if you successfully complete the course, you stand an excellent chance of gaining well-paid employment.
The majority of students on this programme are part-time and are already employed in the industry, though all recent full-time graduates have progressed to appropriate employment in the building services industry.
Opportunities exist with small and large national building services engineering consultancies and contractors, and also in the public sector with local authorities and government agencies.
You could find yourself working as a consultant within a professional team or in contracting where you would develop consultants' schemes into working practical installations. Other possible roles include facilities managers or representatives for organisations that require engineering work, such as banks, hospitals and police forces.
All students in their first year of study will have an opportunity to engage with the CareerSmart programme as an integral part of a core module of study. Once you have completed this, a wide range of other career-related provision and services will be available to support your development throughout your studies.
