Translating your academic studies into essential professional experience
To give you a real taste of the world of HR, you will have the chance to undertake work experience, allowing you to put into practice skills acquired on the course. A series of ‘working life’ events give you a first-hand view of HRM in action, with regular input from HRM professionals. We are currently working with a range of providers to put together voluntary and intern opportunities to develop the skills you will need to complete CIPD Associate membership. This practical experience, together with CIPD membership, will prove invaluable when you first enter the highly competitive graduate job market.

Dedicated personal tutor plus study skills support
Networking is an effective way to make new contacts and improve your career prospects, and so the HR team at LJMU is currently bringing together a community of undergraduate and postgraduate HR students and practitioners who can learn from and support each other.
During your studies you will also have the continual support of a personal tutor who will meet with you one-to-one to discuss assessments, monitor progress and help you to formulate your career plans. We also provide study support classes should you need extra help with assessments.
Case studies and role plays are used to enhance your practical and academic skills in business and HR management on this BA degree course.

Teaching and learning
Plenty of opportunities for first-hand experience
Teaching is primarily delivered via a combination of workshops and online tutorials and support sessions via email and Canvas, our virtual learning environment. Additional lectures, seminars, personal and group tutorials will be scheduled across the year.
We strongly encourage use of Canvas, and networking opportunities provided through programme community meetings and Facebook.
Our suite of HR programmes share events and master classes to encourage students' networking with HR professionals and the development of professional practice. We have a Facebook site, 'LJMU HR students' and graduates have continued to engage with the page, offering advice and alerting current students to prospective job opportunities.
As with any degree-level programme, private study is a significant and important part of your learning, as it will give you a wider perspective on your subject area as well developing the commitment to a life-long skill that will prove invaluable to your future career.
Below is an example study pattern for BA Business and Human Resource Management part-time students:
- Induction session – w/c 15 September 5.30 – 7.30pm
- Monday workshops – September – June/early July 5.30pm – 7.30pm
- Online Workshops – September – June/early July 5.30 – 6.30pm (please note that this session is virtual and you do not need to be in LJMU to take part – all that is required is internet access. Dates, times and format of online participation will vary depending on the needs of the module)
Each module is supported with one full block day per module 9.30am-5.30pm on a Wednesday. Exact dates are confirmed at the start of the academic year. As part-time students, the time you spend studying outside scheduled classes is of paramount importance to your success on the programme. Typically, the programme starts with Learning and IT skills for Business and Social and Legal Framewrosk for HR. Other modules may rotate to maximise your choice of options in later years of the programme.

Your tutors have all worked in the field of human resource management and have an excellent record of developing HR professionals. We have been providing postgraduate education for HR professionals for over 40 years and have an excellent reputation with the CIPD at local group, branch and national levels.
The team are active researchers who regularly present their findings at national and international conferences, so you can be confident that the curriculum is directly informed by the latest research and trends in HR.
All the tutors have experience and expertise both in academic attainment and the world of commerce and this is reflected in the teaching we do on the programme.
Assessment and feedback
A combination of different assessment methods are used on this degree
We understand that each student performs differently depending on how they are assessed, which is why we use a combination of assessment methods. These include: presentations, coursework, portfolios, role play and exam. In the early years of the programme you may be assessed for group-based team building and communication skills, whereas at Level 6 and in the final year assessments are mostly on an individual basis, including a work-based impact investigation.
Your tutors will aim to provide assessment feedback within three weeks, and will happily discuss it with you one-to-one. This is particularly important as it gives you a chance to identify your strengths as well as the areas that may need further attention.

Entry requirements will be linked to personal circumstances. CPP or CTP (Certificate in Personnel Practice or Certificate in Training Practice) at NVQ level 3, A level, HNC, HND or other level three qualifications will be considered. Level of work experience will also be given consideration when making offers. Appropriate exemptions will be recognised for students transferring from other part time programmes or courses – these will be linked to our own standards and CIPD requirements and will be considered on an individual basis.

Finance and fees
Find out more about the student funding that you may be eligible for from either LJMU or the government. This section will give you information about grants and loans as well as targeted support for students with children, adult dependants or those with a disability.
Please note that the amount of money you will receive as a student is dependent on where in the UK you normally live (i.e. England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland).
LJMU's scholarships are open to all new full-time Home and EU undergraduates that are liable to pay tuition fees. These awards are not income assessed, they are based on excellence. If successful, you will be awarded a scholarship for each year of your course subject to satisfactory progress. Scholarships are worth between £1,000 and £10,000 per year. The money you receive doesn’t have to be paid back.
The LJMU bursary is automatically paid to eligible students – you do not need to apply for it. The annual bursary is £500, which works out at £1,500 over a three year degree.
LJMU bursaries are means-tested and you don’t have to pay them back; they are intended to help you meet some of the costs associated with being a student.
In 2017 LJMU charged a tuition fee of £9,250* for the majority of its full time undergraduate programmes and £6,935 per year for its part time courses. You will be charged a fee for each year of your course. The University reserves the right to increase fees up to the maximum permitted by law or government policy in the second and subsequent years of your course. Generally, these fee increases are linked to RPIX inflation (Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
The important thing to remember is that you don't have to pay your tuition fees upfront - subject to meeting eligibility criteria, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course.
You can also take out a maintenance or living cost loan for each year of your course to cover your living expenses, such as rent and food.
You don’t start repaying your student loans until after you’ve left university and start earning at least £21,000.**

LJMU is committed to ensuring that students understand the full cost of studying at the University. Your tuition fee will cover or contribute to, as appropriate, expenses associated with your core modules, including:

Living expenses (maintenance) loan
In addition to your tuition fees, eligible full-time undergraduate students can also apply for a maintenance loan to cover your living costs. If you’re eligible, you can take out a loan for each year of your course.
The amount you’ll receive will depend on where in the UK you normally live and your household income. This money will be paid into your bank or building society account in three instalments and it’s up to you to budget for your living costs.
The government has stated that it intends to introduce a pro rata maintenance loan for part time students from England from the 2018/19 academic year.

Paying back your student loans
You only start repaying your student loans the April after you have graduated or left university and start earning £21,000* or above. Repayments are based on a percentage of your salary not how much you have borrowed from the Student Loans Company. Repayments are currently set at 9% of any income over the threshold (which is currently set at £21,000).*

The skills you will acquire in communication, self-motivation, adaptability and persuasiveness during this BA (Hons) course will open up a diverse range of careers in both business and human resources.
Graduate careers can range from consultancy and general human resource or personnel management, to business start up and enterprise, training, learning and development and recruitment. Recent graduates have enjoyed considerable success, gaining HR roles with companies like the London Underground, Siemens and Morrisons.
There is also the opportunity to progress to postgraduate study, either on our MA Human Resource Management, which offers full membership of the CIPD, the new MSc Entrepreneurship, the MBA Business Management or into research. Within two years of graduation, 35% of students are taking Masters-level qualifications usually sponsored by their employers and are aiming for more senior roles in HR and full CIPD membership. You will work with the CIPD Behavioural mapping from first year onwards to show your personal development in key behaviours and skills valued in the marketplace.
All students in their first year of study will have an opportunity to engage with the CareerSmart programme as an integral part of a core module of study. Once you have completed this, a wide range of other career-related provision and services will be available to support your development throughout your studies.
The new CareerSmart e-learning tool will introduce you to the steps involved in making informed choices about your career. It will enable you to consider your strengths and development areas, your career motivators, the options available to you and the necessary steps to take to achieve your career goals.
Professional accreditation / links
This degree is accredited to Intermediate Standard level by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). When you successfully complete this programme, with the required amount of experience provided by work placements and internships, you will be in a strong position to develop your portfolio to upgrade your CIPD student membership to Associate Member.
We have excellent links with the CIPD, both nationally and locally, which enable us to maintain our high standards of teaching, learning and assessment. Prizes are awarded annually from the CIPD Liverpool Group and local employers to students who excel in both the academic and the practitioner elements of the programme.
Please note: this programme is not suitable for students who require a Tier 4 visa. Due to immigration requirements, Tier 4 international students must study on a full-time basis.
