About your course

The BSc (Hons) Business with Digital Marketing at Liverpool John Moores University offers a blend of a high quality business degree combined with cutting-edge marketing modules.

Foundation Year

The Foundation Year is ideal if you have the interest and ability to study for a degree, but do not have the qualifications to enter directly onto the Business with Digital Marketing honours degree programme yet.

Once you pass the Foundation Year (level 3) you will progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. If you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course (subject to eligibility criteria).

This degree offers an optional sandwich year in which you spend 48 weeks on a paid work placement in the UK or overseas. This will enable you to put into practice many of the concepts and techniques developed in years one and two as well as developing your personal skills and enhancing your CV.

​Students who complete the placement year in the School's more established degrees tend to experience a significant improvement in their academic performance and many go on to gain first class honours degrees, often returning to work for their placement company after graduation.

Moreover, if you currently hold a HND or Foundation degree and wish to continue studying to achieve a full BA (Hons) degree, you can apply to join this degree in the final year.

Liverpool Business School has historically had an excellent employment record with graduates securing graduate-level positions with leading employers in public and private sectors.  These include Everton Football Club, Kellogg company, Santander and Deloitte. In the last Destination of Leavers in HE survey (2016/17 data), 95.2% of our graduates had secured employment or were in further study within 6 months of graduating. 

The first year provides you with a solid foundation of business knowledge before leading to more marketing focused modules providing you with the options to work in a variety of business or marketing roles.

LJMU aims to make an international opportunity available to every student. You may be able to study abroad as part of your degree, either in Europe or the US. This module aims to facilitate your development of personal, academic and professional skills as a foundation for your current and future studies in Business related subjects. It will equip you with the tools to become confident and independent learners at university.

Understanding Business Organisations and Operations

This module provides you with an introduction to the world of business, the types of business and structures, the functional areas, and management theories and challenges faced by business in today's commercial world.

Essentials of Management
20 credits

This module introduces you to management theory. This foundation module will develop your appreciation, understanding and application of management and professionalism in different career pathways and specialist areas.

Introduction to Marketing and PR Communications

This module gives you an understanding of the key concepts and terminology used in marketing and public relations. It also gives you a knowledge and understanding of your role within organisations and explores the factors that can influence consumer behaviour.

Data Analysis Techniques for Business

This module equips you with the technical skills to be able to design and produce Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for business use, and to facilitate the development of basic analytical skills.

This module develops your independent learning and expertise in an area of business relating to your target programme. The course aims to introduce you to business intelligence tools and software used to transform structured and unstructured data into actionable insight. Based on data, you will learn how to lead and manage digital initiatives and/or to identify digital opportunities and devise digital strategy to respond to changes in markets and competition.

Research Methods

The module aims to enable you to develop a research proposal on a topic of your choice. The module aims to develop your skills in the research process. Working as an individual, you will work on a real research problem which will develop your skills in questionnaire design, team work, the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and the production of a comprehensive research report.

Retail Management
20 credits

This module is designed to allow you to explore the retail sector through practical applications of retailing and business theory to real world retail situations. It is intended to raise awareness of contemporary issues in retailing and the likely impact of this on retail strategy adopted. 

Consumer And Buyer Behaviour In Action
20 credits

This module aims to offer you an opportunity to develop in-depth understanding of the study of consumer behaviour and consumer buying process. The module aims to cover the key aspects like consumers’ influence on the field of marketing and vice versa; consumer perceptions and motivations; consumer decision-making process; effect of culture and lifestyles on consumers; and external variables affecting consumer behaviour.

The aims of this module is for you to develop an understanding of business problems and issues particularly at strategic level. It also provides you with the opportunity to apply key academic theories and models in the development of a solution that meets the client’s needs.

Innovation and Creativity for Business
20 credits

This module will allow you to understand how to create and manage business change which leads to product or service innovation; to understand core and secondary corporate innovation practices enabling business leadership; to present and analyse the strategic process and business informatics necessary for creating novel ideas with commercial viability; and to provide sustainable strategies for valuing commercially innovative approaches.

This module is intended to teach you how to not just think creatively, but how to manage innovative ideas to be aware of the power that creativity and innovation can bring to contemporary business environment and the organisation. 

Marketing For Emerging Markets
20 credits

This module highlights the challenges of operating internationally in a global economy by comparing and contrasting international marketing theory based on developed economies with those of emerging markets and regional economies worldwide. You are taught the key ideological and political philosophies that exist internationally and are given an indication of emerging markets and their position in the global economy. 

Strategic Branding
20 credits

This module enables you to analyse the principles and techniques involved in branding strategically within in a micro and macro context.

Corporate Social Responsibility
20 credits

The aim of this module is for you to develop an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of ethical decision making in a global business environment, to appreciate the impact of global business on host nations and to introduce present and potential future issues facing business.

Personal Development and Employment
20 credits

This module aims to support you in joining the programme from another institution/country. It is recognised that some students will not have experienced UK education or education in a UK Higher Education institution and will require guidance and instruction to enable them to adjust their understanding of academic practice to meet the expectations of the Liverpool Business School.

Excellent facilities and learning resources

We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies.  Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.​

Teaching is delivered via lectures, workshops and seminars to discuss ideas and issues more informally.

Work-related Learning

Early in level 5 you can decide whether to undertake a paid 48-week work placement in the UK or overseas.  You would do this placement between level 5 and 6.

Placements give you experience of what it’s like to work in industry as well as giving you a chance to put your learning into practice, develop personal skills and enhance your employability.

Liverpool Business School's Employability Support Unit will  help you find suitable vacancies and support you during the application process and whilst on placement.

Students from Liverpool Business School have completed placements with organisations as diverse as the NHS, Liverpool Football Club, Bentley and Airbus.

Support and guidance

Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support

​The Liverpool Business School is a supportive environment in which to study and the 'student-centred approach' of your tutors will ensure that you are given the support and guidance you need. You will be assigned a personal tutor. They will set up one-to-one tutorials with you to discuss a piece of coursework or to work with you on your personal development plan.

Assessment

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

​We understand that students perform differently depending on the type of assessment they are given and so a range of assessment methods are used on the programme. These include written assignments (essays/reports, individual/group), exams (closed book), practical assessments, individual and group presentations, portfolios, reflective logs and a dissertation. There could be up to three assessments per module, for example a presentation, report and exam.

Written feedback is provided within 15 working days of submission, but you can also get face-to-face feedback from your tutor. We believe that constructive feedback is vital in helping you identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to develop further.

Programme Leader

Lucy spent the early part of her career in finance/management roles in industry, predominately in the financial services sector. After a career break, Lucy entered academia as a lecturer and developed a growing passion for education. She has been Programme Leader for two years and is focused on programme management and development. Lucy's aim is to ensure the courses are engaging and relevant with the opportunity to gain valuable transferable skills as well as building subject knowledge. 

"I enjoy seeing our students embrace all that Liverpool Business School has to offer, wherever it is a successful placement year in industry, a semester or year spent studying abroad, or the buzz of our final year live business consultancy projects. Of course graduation in the amazing Liverpool Anglican cathedral has to be my most favourite day of the year!"

What you can expect from your School

The School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant Campus and Liverpool’s growing Knowledge Quarter. The building is home to high quality lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social spaces, a café and a roof terrace with far reaching views of the cityscape and welsh hills. It is only a short walk from LJMU’s Aldham Robarts Library, which contains all the resources you will require for your studies, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Securing your place at LJMU

​We are looking for students with the potential to:Understand and critically evaluate the theory, concepts and principles that underpin the practical techniques of business. Demonstrate their understanding by communicating effectively, both orally and in their written work. Possess the self-discipline to manage their time and tasks effectively throughout their time here at LJMU.

Pearson/Edexcel HND and foundation degree awards in a relevant subject area will be considered for direct entry to level 6. 

The University reserves the right to withdraw or make alterations to a course and facilities if necessary; this may be because such changes are deemed to be beneficial to students, are minor in nature and unlikely to impact negatively upon students or become necessary due to circumstances beyond the control of the University.
