About your course
This professionally accredited foundation degree will provide you with practical skills in marketing and includes exciting paid placement opportunities so that you can gain the industry experience you need to succeed in this competitive field after graduation.
LJMU has been teaching marketing for over 30 years and has built a strong reputation for its teaching staff, both in terms of their industry experience, commitment to students and connections with industry.
The Foundation Year is ideal if you have the interest and ability to study for a degree, but do not have the qualifications to enter directly onto the Marketing honours degree programme yet.
Once you pass the Foundation Year (level 3) you will progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. If you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course (subject to eligibility criteria).
Another advantage of this degree is that students can choose to undertake an optional year studying abroad or working in industry between their second and third year of study. The optional year in industry means that you can spend 48 weeks on a paid work placement in the UK or overseas. This will enable you to put into practice many of the concepts and techniques developed in years one and two, as well as developing your personal skills and enhancing your CV. Many students who complete the placement year experience a marked improvement in their academic performance, with many going on to gain first class honours degrees. Many also return to work for their placement company after graduation.
Alternatively, students have the option to study abroad in one of our partner universities. Liverpool Business School has partnerships with business schools at universities and colleges across Europe, in the USA and in China. Students on this programme are able to spend an additional year of study at one of our partner universities between the second and third years. All study abroad opportunities are taught in English. There are also many supported opportunities for activities at partner universities during summer vacations and Liverpool Business School provides free language skills courses.
You can only select one of these options, either to study abroad or undertake a year working in industry. Alternatively, you can choose to continue directly on to your final year after completing your second year of study.

Armed with a set of analytical, planning, IT and problem-solving skills, you will be qualified to deal with people, money, markets and products in a wide range of organisations by the time you graduate.
Liverpool Business School has historically had an excellent employment record with graduates securing graduate-level positions with leading employers in public and private sectors. These include Everton Football Club, Kellogg company, Santander and Deloitte. In the last Destination of Leavers in HE survey (2016/17 data), 100% of our marketing graduates had secured employment or were in further study within 6 months of graduating.
This BA (Hons) degree is the ideal starting point for a career in general marketing, brand management, advertising, promotions, customer services, strategic marketing and marketing research.
Previous graduates from the programme have gained employment as advertising executives, promotions co-ordinators, publicity officers, brand managers, customer relations advisors and research analysts.
Postgraduate study is another option – choosing to study on the MSc Digital Marketing, the MSc Entrepreneurship or the new MSc Management and Digital Business postgraduate degrees, all taught at Liverpool Business School, or the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing are excellent ways to follow up this degree.

Developing Skills for Business
This module aims to facilitate your development of personal, academic and professional skills as a foundation for your current and future studies in Business related subjects. It will equip you with the tools to become confident and independent learners at university.
Understanding Business Organisations and Operations
This module provides you with an introduction to the world of business, the types of business and structures, the functional areas, and management theories and challenges faced by business in today's commercial world.
Essentials of Management
This module introduces you to management theory. This foundation module will develop your appreciation, understanding and application of management and professionalism in different career pathways and specialist areas.
Introduction to Marketing and PR Communications
This module gives you an understanding of the key concepts and terminology used in marketing and public relations. It also gives you a knowledge and understanding of your role within organisations and explores the factors that can influence consumer behaviour.
Data Analysis Techniques for Business
This module equips you with the technical skills to be able to design and produce Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for business use, and to facilitate the development of basic analytical skills.
Programme Case Study
This module develops your independent learning and expertise in an area of business relating to your target programme. Through a co-creation process your subject interests will be harnessed to enable you to develop your knowledge in a self-selected topic area. The module aims to be flexible to enable you to explore an area of interest to you and you will be assessed in a manner that supports this.
Academic Skills and Digital Literacy
This module enables you to develop the skills necessary to be effective learners at university, and to apply academic and digital skills in the context of your academic studies. You will also be introduced to aspects of career management.
Foundation of Marketing
This module enables you to understand the underlying principles of marketing, including the range of specific marketing activities and their influence on organisations.
Business Market Research
This module enables you to design and fundamentally analyse business market research data in order to understand how it influences business and marketing decisions.
This module enables you to understand the fundamentals of consumer behaviour, including the importance that both external and internal factors have on attitude and behaviour.
This module will develop your understanding of branding and of how brands add value. You will apply a wide range of industry materials to a number of academic branding concepts of models. In the module clear links are made between theory and practice, and ideas of new brand communications will be stimulated throughout the sessions.
Foundations of Business and Management
This module will introduce you to business functions and structures. It will then go on to address issues of management and leadership within business settings.
Media Production Management
This module provides you with an opportunity to produce media according to client needs and plan its distribution. You will explore the tensions between user engagement, creativity, professional and commercial issues in multiplatform production. You will also learn to understand the different requirements of preparing media for different platforms, and manage multi-platform distribution of media across channels.
This module enables you to understand and analyse experiential marketing as a concept, including how brands and consumers interact and the mechanisms for co-creation, experience and connection.
Practical Digital Marketing Skills
This module enables you to demonstrate a practical understanding of the key areas of digital marketing, including current digital marketing tools and website development.
Strategy for Marketers
This module allows you to appreciate and simulate the fundamentals of strategy formation and planning in the marketing context, helping you to achieve or sustain competitive advantage.
Retail and Services Marketing
This module aims to develop your knowledge and practical skills in retailing and services marketing. You will learn to evaluate the changing retail environment, appraise retail supply chains, and develop skills for services marketing through retail operations.
This module provides you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the graduate employment market. You will learn to produce the necessary documentation to secure interviews with prospective employers, reflect on your own learning and development in a series of learning logs, and develop a high level of organisational awareness.
Consumer Psychology and Decision Making
This module explores the relevance of consumer decision making in marketing. You will learn to use consumer psychology to make strategic marketing decisions.
As the world continues to increase trade across and between countries, and the major economies become more integrated, it is essential for you to have an appreciation of the role you are likely to play within this environment. In this module you will use frameworks from previous learning and apply these to a global context, enabling you to understand the main challenges international marketers face in the international markets.
Data Analysis and Application
In addition to acquiring subject knowledge, this module works on building transferable skills, namely by enabling you to transform raw data into useful information that is priceless for marketing managers in decision making in the workplace.
This modules enables you to develop an understanding of the key theory surrounding digital campaign planning. You will learn to critically appraise the key roles that digital channels can play within an overall campaign and to evaluate how digital tactics can be integrated into a traditional integrated marketing campaign.
Marketing Consultancy Project
This module enables you to apply a range of theoretical concepts to practical marketing issues in industry.
Integrated Marketing Communications
This module enables you to analyse a range of strategic marketing communication theories and, from this, understand how to develop an integrated marketing communications plan. You will apply theories to produce a practical advertising and integrated marketing communication campaign.
Teaching and work-related learning
Excellent facilities and learning resources
We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, online activities and seminars and you can expect to have a minimum of 12 hours contact time during each teaching week. Plus you'll be expected to complete independent study and group work and participate in online activities and discussions using our virtual learning environment, Canvas.

Any programme related field trips or course trips may incur additional course costs.
In level 5, you can decide whether to undertake a paid 48-week work placement in the UK or overseas between level 5 and 6.
Placements give you experience of what it’s like to work in the marketing sector as well as giving you a chance to put your learning into practice, develop personal skills and enhance employability.
Students who complete the placement year often experience an improvement in their academic performance and many go on to gain first class honours degrees, often returning to work for their placement company after graduation.
Liverpool Business School's Placement Support Unit will help you find suitable vacancies and support you during the application process and whilst on placement.
Previous marketing students have completed placements with organisations as diverse as Jaguar, Joules and Enterprise Rent a car.
Support and guidance
Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support
The Marketing team at Liverpool Business School is renowned for its student-centred approach and friendly ‘open door’ policy. From the day you begin your studies with us, you will have the support of a personal tutor who will welcome (and indeed expect) a knock on the door any time you need assistance, or just want to chat about the programme.
Should you decide to pursue a year’s placement, you will have the additional support of staff in the Employability Support Unit and an academic tutor to make sure you get the most out of your work experience.
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.
The Marketing team understands that each student is different, and will perform differently depending on how they are assessed. This is why we use a range of assessment methods for each module. They include:
- group presentations
- exams (seen and unseen)
- online multiple-choice exams
- IT-based assessment (website design, Microsoft Office work)
- written work (essays, literature reviews, reports)
- practical assessments (mock interviews and CVs)
You will receive plenty of personal support for assessments from your tutors, and from written guidelines, revision sessions and study support classes.
Your tutors will give you one-to-one feedback on assessments within three weeks, giving you a chance to discuss your strengths as well as the areas that may need further attention.
What you can expect from your School
The School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant Campus and Liverpool’s growing Knowledge Quarter. The building is home to high quality lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social spaces, a café and a roof terrace with far reaching views of the cityscape and welsh hills. It is only a short walk from LJMU’s Aldham Robarts Library, which contains all the resources you will require for your studies, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The University reserves the right to withdraw or make alterations to a course and facilities if necessary; this may be because such changes are deemed to be beneficial to students, are minor in nature and unlikely to impact negatively upon students or become necessary due to circumstances beyond the control of the University.
