National Saturday Clubs at LJMU

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is again proud to participate in the National Saturday Club programme, offering 13-16 year olds the chance to spend their Saturday morning at LJMU, discovering subjects they love.

Saturday Clubs are free to attend and offer young people the chance to meet new friends, have fun, learn new skills and find out more about further education and rewarding careers.

Writing & Talking National Saturday Club @ LJMU

The LJMU Writing & Talking Saturday Club is a free creative writing group where participants explore their writing ideas and skills. Each Saturday morning Club members will approach a different form of writing. These sessions will engage many of our undergraduate subject areas, including writing poetry, character building, scriptwriting, writing about yourself, what objects tell us, short prose and cut ups and wordplay. The aim of the sessions is to encourage members to explore and enhance their creative writing skills, but past students also indicated that it helped them with life skills, such as confidence, team building, communication and making new friends.

The class will produce new work each week and this will take the form of posters, pamphlets and notebooks full of writing. The Club will also get the opportunity to visit the Walker Art Gallery to write about the gallery’s paintings and sculpture, and the Museum of Liverpool where writing will take place in an old Liverpool tram or beside the museum’s replica liver bird. For its Masterclass, the Writing & Talking Club will work with a stand-up comedian to write gags and then preform them at an open mic. The best of the Club’s creative material will be developed into an anthology to be showcased at the Summer Show in Somerset House London, with all members invited to attend – for free!

Science at the Crime Scene National Saturday Club @ LJMU

Join the ‘Science at the Crime Scene’ Saturday Club at LJMU to use a range of practical science skills to solve a murder! In the 12 weekly sessions from January to April 2019 you will use Biology, Chemistry and Physics based science skills to be a real life crime scene Investigator just like Barry Allen in The Flash!

Can you solve this crime … ?

At 3.00am on Monday 17 October 2018 police were called to 10 John Moores Street, Liverpool after the neighbour reported a disturbance and saw a male suspect running from the property, down John Moores Street and turning right into James Parsons Way. The police have taken two suspects into custody and have collected evidence from both suspects. The property 10 John Moores Street is known to LJMU Police as the residence of a drug dealer, Mr A Deal. On entering the property a male body was found believed to be Mr A Deal. The forensic pathologist was called and the body was removed to the mortuary for an autopsy to be performed. Who did it? Is there enough evidence to prosecute them? You Decide!

Following on from last year’s National Saturday Club success, we would again like to offer students aged 13-16 years the opportunity to participate in the Art & Design National Saturday Club at LJMU

The LJMU Art and Design Saturday Club programme involves free weekly Saturday morning sessions, and engages all of our Art and Design undergraduate subject areas, including:

Art and Design skills will be enhanced by participating in this course, but past students also indicated that it helped them with life skills, such as confidence, team building, communication skills and making new friends.

The theme for this year is ‘All About Me’ with each term’s workshops providing club members the opportunity to engage in a range of creative activities and processes that explore this theme from different subject perspectives such as image, identity, brand and place. Club members will also take part in three National Events; the London Visit in which club members take part in a pop-up self-portrait exhibition and visit the capital’s museums and galleries; a Masterclass with a leading creative industry professional; and the Summer Show where all club members exhibit their work in an exhibition at Somerset House, London – all for free!
