Dual PhDs

Guidance for developing proposals for dual PhD awards

The following guidance for developing proposals for dual PhD awards is consistent with the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, with particular reference to Chapter B10: Managing higher education provision with others and Chapter B11: Research degrees, and to the QAA Characteristics Statement, Qualifications involving more than one degree-awarding body (2015).

Guidance for developing proposals for dual PhD awards

A Dual PhD Award is given when both the University and one or more awarding bodies each grant an award on completion of the research degree programme.  It requires a Cotutelle agreement to be drawn up for the student(s) which details the arrangements for joint supervision, delivery of research training, establishes the period of time spent at each institution, and agrees examination requirements. On successful completion the PGR receives two certificates one from each institution.
