Careers Support for Students with Disabilities at LJMU

Student Futures is LJMU’s one-stop-shop for careers, employability and start-up support, and we are committed to supporting all our students and graduates in your transition from university into the workplace or self-employment. In collaboration with a number of student interns, we have created a range of careers resources for students with disabilities or health conditions or those who are neurodiverse.

While you may not describe yourself or identify as ‘disabled’, your health condition, neurodiversity or other different ability may make you eligible for additional support or funding when job-seeking, in employment or setting up your own business. In the resources below, we have used ‘disabled’ or ‘disability’ as a broad term to cover a wide range of conditions, including:

• Physical disabilities, such as limited mobility, cerebral palsy etc. 
• Sensory disabilities, such as hearing loss or visual impairments.
• Mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder etc. 
• Neurodiversity or specific learning differences, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, ASC etc.
• Long-term health conditions, such as HIV or chronic fatigue syndrome.
• Unseen disabilities, such as epilepsy, asthma, Crohn’s disease etc. 

‘Disability’ is also one of the nine protected characteristics in The Equality Act 2010 (see video below), which brought together different laws to protect individuals from unlawful treatment, such as discrimination, harassment or victimisation. This includes discrimination in the workplace and during the recruitment process. Even though you may not identify as disabled, you may meet its definition of disability and therefore be covered by The Equality Act 2010. 

 

If you need adjustments to access our support and resources, please email to let us know.  This could include:

• An extended careers meeting by prior arrangement (up to 1 hour instead of 30 minutes)
• A careers meeting at an alternative on-campus venue, or a virtual appointment, to suit your needs
• Careers advice and guidance by telephone or email.
