School, programme and level codes on timetables

The school or department appears as a code in the timetable when the full course title is too long to fit. For example, Liverpool School of Art and Design is shortened to LSA. Here is the full list of codes for our Schools and Departments:

Some of the codes that appear will be codes for the faculties – do not use these. The faculty codes are:

You can search for your course with keywords. On the search page, type a keyword in the ‘Search by Keyword’ field.

For example, typing ‘design’ in the search keyword field will provide a list of all course titles that contain the word ‘design’.

You can shorten the list by adding your school and code in the ‘Filter by School (optional)’ field. This will reduce the results list to only courses containing the keyword ‘design’ and are in the school you have specified.

Explaining the search results

The list of course titles that appears in the Search results are written in a specific way. For example, BAH.Fashion: Design and Communication-NVQ.

The codes at the start of the course title describe the type of course, and the letters and number at the end indicate the study level.

Here are some sample course titles and their codes:

BAH.Fashion: Design and Communication-NQ4
BA indicates Bachelor of Arts
H indicates a degree with Honours
NQ4 indicates level 4
This complete code is usually the first year of a 3-year course without a foundation year.

SBAH.Fashion: Design and Communication-NQ4
SBA indicates Bachelor of Arts with a sandwich year
H indicates a degree with Honours
NQ4 indicates level 4
This complete code is usually the first year of a 4-year course with a sandwich industrial placement year.

BAHF.Fashion: Design and Communication-NQ3 (Fnd)
BA indicates Bachelor of Arts
H indicates a degree with Honours
F and (FND) indicates a 4-year course with a foundation year
NQ3 indicates level 3
This complete code is a course that includes a foundation year. The foundation year will usually be the first year of the 4-year course.

This complete code is usually the final year of a 3-year course that started with a foundation year.

So - why don’t we just state year 1, or year 3? Well, it’s complicated.

The ‘first year’ is not the same for every student. You might be in your first year at LJMU but starting on a 3-year or a 4-year version of your course. Or you might be transferring into a course after studying elsewhere. Or you might be repeating a year for various reasons.

We use the national qualification framework level description because students at each level are studying the same modules regardless of how many years they have been at LJMU.

We follow the national qualification framework which is made up of study levels. These are:

NQ3 - Level 3

This is usually the first year of study for four-year undergraduate degree that includes a foundation year. It is sometimes called year 0.

NQ4 - Level 4

• Undergraduate degree - first year of a 3-year undergraduate degree.
• Undergraduate degree with foundation year - If you start on a foundation year, this is the second year of a four-year undergraduate degree.
• Master’s degree - first year of a 4-year integrated Master’s degree.
• Foundation degree or HNC/HND - first year of a 2-year Foundation Degree or a HNC/HND.

NQ5 - Level 5

• Undergraduate degree - second year of a 3-year undergraduate degree.
• Undergraduate degree with foundation year - If you start on a foundation year, this is the third year of a four-year undergraduate degree.
• Master’s degree - second year of a 4-year integrated Master’s degree.
• Foundation degree or HNC/HND - second year of a 2-year Foundation Degree or a HNC/HND.

NQ6 - Level 6

• Undergraduate degree – third and final year of a 3-year undergraduate degree.
• Undergraduate degree with foundation year - If you start on a foundation year, this is the fourth and final year of a four-year undergraduate degree.
• Master’s degree – third year of a 4-year integrated Master’s degree.
• Foundation degree or HNC/HND – top-up year of a Foundation Degree or a HNC/HND, or if you have transferred from another university.

NQ7 - Level 7

• Postgraduate Master’s degree.
• Master’s degree – fourth and final year of a 4-year integrated Master’s degree.
• Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates.

NQ8 - Level 8

• Doctoral Level Research.

Please note
A foundation year and a Foundation Degree are different. A foundation year is the first year of a longer Bachelor’s Degree course. A Foundation Degree is an award in itself and is usually 2 years in length.

We use room codes on the timetable as we know a lot of you look at it on a mobile, and the full building name and address just won’t fit on the phone screen. The codes all based on the building names and room numbers; so once you understand how the code works, you will easily be able to understand where you need to be.

An example room code is SLB/301. The SLB part represents Student Life Building. 301 means the room is on the 3rd floor and is room number 301.

• City Campus - Located around Tithebarn Street and Great Crosshall Street, and also includes ‘Byrom Street Campus’, which is a group of buildings all located together at Byrom Street and Byrom Way.
• Mount Pleasant - Located mainly between the city's two cathedrals, around Mount Pleasant, Rodney Street and Brownlow Hill.
• Copperas Hill - Linking our two campuses, Copperas Hill is home to our landmark Student Life Building and LJMU Sports Centre, located adjacent to Liverpool Lime Street train station between Copperas Hill and Brownlow Hill.
