Add a rubric to a Graded Discussion or New Quiz
Rubrics can also be added to Graded Discussions and New Quizzes.
Open the Discussion or New Quiz, select the More Options menu (⋮) and select Add Rubric.
See:
Enhanced Rubrics integrates directly with SpeedGrader.
Open SpeedGrader, select View Rubric, then choose the most appropriate layout:
- Traditional - (Displays the rubric in the familiar table layout)
- Horizontal - (Displays one criterion at a time, reducing horizontal scrolling)
- Vertical - (Displays criteria in a stacked layout that works well with larger rubrics)
Traditional is the default view. You can change the view while grading, and your selected view is retained as you move between students until you leave or refresh SpeedGrader.

Select the appropriate rating for each criterion and add criterion-specific comments where required. The rubric score will automatically contribute to the assignment grade when Use this rubric for assignment grading has been selected within your Canvas assignment.
See: Canvas assignments guidance (SpeedGrader dropdown)
Rubrics can be managed from Rubrics in the Course Navigation menu.
From here you can manage your course rubrics, including options to:
- Edit
- Duplicate
- Copy
- Archive
- Delete
Archived rubrics remain available where they are already in use but are separated from your active rubrics. Your original draft currently describes this as hiding them from the Find a Rubric list.
Editing a rubric used in multiple assessments
IMPORTANT: A rubric cannot be edited directly once it has been added to more than one assessment.
If you need to change a rubric for a particular assessment, edit it from that assessment. Canvas will prompt you to create a copy. The edited copy will replace the original rubric for that assessment, while the original rubric remains associated with the other assessments.
The copied rubric is also saved to the course Rubrics area for future use.

Important: Editing reused rubrics
Once a rubric has been attached to more than one assessment, it becomes read-only. If you need to make changes, you will need to create a revised version of the rubric and attach this to the relevant assessment.
Before using Enhanced Rubrics, keep the following in mind:
- If the rubric will calculate the assignment grade, ensure Use this rubric for assignment grading is selected in your assignment before students begin submitting work.
- Check that the rubric points and assignment points match.
- Rubrics attached to multiple assessments cannot be edited directly. If changes are required, create a revised version of the rubric and attach this to the appropriate assessment.
- Consider using draft rubrics while developing new assessment criteria.
- Rubrics can be reused across courses using the Copy to option.
- Archived rubrics remain attached to existing assessments but are hidden from the Find a Rubric list when creating new assessments.
- Take care when deleting rubrics that have already been used for assessment.
