Research Ethics Training

Please complete the LJMU Research Ethics Training on Canvas before completing an ethics application and applying for ethical approval.

The training introduces the principles of research ethics from a historical perspective, it details the principles, explains how research can abide by the principles and explains how different types of research, participants and methods etc. challenge the principles of research ethics.

  • The training should take approximately 2-3 hours to complete - if you close the training, it should reopen from where you left off.
  • The training will allow you to view the present slide, but you will not be able to skip forward or back
  • At relevant points in the training you will be asked to complete short quizzes to help you check your understanding.
  • Some of the quiz questions are multiple choice and some are multiple answer type questions whereby there might be more than one correct answer - please read the questions carefully before answering.
  • If you do not achieve 100% in a quiz, you will be automatically redirected back to the relevant slides so that you can improve your understanding and answer all of the questions correctly on the next attempt.
  • At the end of the training, you will be given the opportunity for a certificate of completion email to be sent to yourself and the University Research Ethics Committee (UREC) to certify that you have completed the training.
  • You don't have to complete the training in one sitting - if you close the training, the training will automatically restart from where you left off.
  • Please do not open the training in more than one window or on more than one device - the training will start from the beginning.
  • Please note: To hear the audio, you must be connected to the internet via Wifi or Ethernet cable - the audio may not work if you connect to the internet via 4G.

An ethics application from a student who has not completed the LJMU Research Ethics Training will be rejected for review.
