Creating infographics | Staff guide

Overview

This guide will help you to understand how to design and create an infographic and also support students to create their own.

What is an infographic?

An infographic is a collective term for an image that uses a mixture of text, graphs, and pictures. The design is very concise and direct so that you can read and understand it in seconds.

“to persuade, entertain and inform the audience and also obtaining the readers’ attraction, hence, the readers can distinguish why they need to read the infographic” (Krum, 2013)

The concept has developed as part of social media over the past 10 years. However, some relate it back the development of data graphs such as those made by Florence Nightingale or Charles Joseph Minard

It requires the designer to be very clear about what they want to communicate. It also needs the designer to be inventive in order to capture the essence of the information in an eye-catching way. This is so that it captures the viewer's attention as well as communicates the idea.
