Panopto | Staff guide
Panopto is a tool that helps you record videos and audio for teaching. You can record lectures, create short teaching videos, and store all your recordings in one safe place. Students can watch these recordings to help them learn and revise.
How to Use Panopto with Canvas for Tutors
Important things you need to know:
Before you start recording, there are some important rules you must follow:
- You must tell everyone they are being recorded
- You need permission from guest speakers before recording them
- You must follow copyright rules - don't record other people's work without permission
- Recordings are for students to help with learning - not to replace coming to class
- Students cannot share recordings with others
- If someone doesn't want to be in the recording, you must make allowances (like pausing the recording when they speak, or editing them out of the recording)
- There are some types of teaching sessions which are less appropriate to record such as highly interactive sessions
Your rights:
- You own the performance rights to your recordings
- Recordings cannot be used without your permission
- When you leave LJMU, you can delete your recordings

How staff at LJMU are using Panopto
Staff at LJMU are using Panopto in lots of creative ways to help students learn. Here are some ideas that might inspire you:
- Quick videos for tricky topics: Make short videos about things students find difficult. This helps answer common questions and saves you time. You can share these videos on Canvas or email them to students.
- Flipped classroom: Record short videos for students to watch before class. Then use class time for activities, discussions, and problem-solving instead of just talking.
- Recording guest speakers: Record visiting experts so you can use their talks again with future students.
- Student presentations:Record student presentations for marking and feedback. Some staff also use these recordings to help students improve their presentation skills.
- Supporting students during referrals: Record videos explaining assignments to help students who are doing referrals.
- Sharing resources: Share your recordings with other staff. For example, one video showing a basic lab technique could help thousands of students over time.
- Lecture capture: Record some or all of your teaching sessions. This helps students with accessibility problems to learn and revise.
Automatic archiving and deletion of recordings
If a recording is not viewed by anyone for two years it will go into archive mode.
Archived recordings can be restored by any Panopto user with the link to the recording, or from the search page. Restored recordings will automatically be made available for viewing again within 48 hours.
Creators will also have access to an “Archive” list, similar to the Recycle Bin, where they can review all their archived content and restore it for viewing if they wish.
Attempting to access the recording before the restore has completed will display a countdown to its availability for any user accessing the link. If “Email me when sessions finish processing” is switched on in the requester’s Panopto notification settings, you will receive an email when the recording is ready to view again.
Here is more information about restoring an archived recording.
The archived recording will be automatically deleted from the archive folder 1 year after it was placed in this folder.
If you’ve recorded content that hasn’t been watched and you are concerned that this might be deleted after 3 years, all you have to do is restore the recording and watch part of it.
