Support for Windows 10 and the Office Applications running on Windows 10 ends early in the next academic year. This means that laptops not upgraded by then will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft, and they become a risk.
New security threats emerge daily, so it is probable that any laptop not updated by the deadline will be prevented from accessing university services such as Office Applications, including Outlook, Teams and OneDrive. IT Services has a lot of upgrades to complete and limited resources to do the work, so it has to happen on a tight schedule.
The entire process should take approximately 2 hours.
You will hand your laptop over to ITS and we expect you will receive the same laptop back within 20 to 30 minutes. ITS will convert your laptop to Windows 11 and return it to you.
If anything unforeseen happens and we are unable to upgrade your device we will be able to issue you with a replacement device to prevent you from having to return.
At this point you will be expected to log in to your device and complete the installation process. This can be done from any LJMU building, you do not have to wait around, and ITS will provide you with the instructions to complete this. It will take around 30-40 minutes to complete.

If you have a ‘special’ laptop (for example extra lightweight, larger screen, faster processor, etcetera), please tell IT Services that you have additional requirements when you are contacted.
This upgrade will wipe everything off your computer (or we will replace the computer entirely). We install the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etcetera. but any extra applications you need, you will have to find and install yourself from the Company Portal. This is replacing AppPlayer and Software Centre where you would have previously looked to install software from.
Not all applications that were previously available will be in Company Portal initially, so we have provided an easy-to-use form in HelpMe which will ask you for some more information before we make it available (we have to check the apps are secure and we are licensed to use them).
We will replace desktop PCs with a standard laptop, dock, monitors and wireless keyboard and mouse. The experience will be identical to using your desktop but is more flexible and makes supporting you in future easier and more efficient. You will need to evidence your right to an additional computer (for example Disability Needs Assessment, Occupational Health report, etcetera)
You will need to get your laptop upgraded before you finish for the summer. IT Services will be targeting academic staff who need an upgrade first and will contact you when it is your turn to have your laptop upgraded. It is vital that you respond promptly and co-operate with the process. Failing to respond may mean you miss your turn and your device will not be upgraded in time.
Wait to be contacted by ITS. Once contacted, it is vital that you respond promptly and co-operate with the process. Failing to respond may mean you miss your turn and your device will not be upgraded in time. If you plan to be away from the university over the summer months, please ensure you’ve completed the upgrade before you finish for the summer.
- Move any data you have stored on your local device onto your OneDrive
- Fill in the indemnity form. We will send you this when we book your upgrade
- Move your files from your M Drive to your OneDrive
Important note:
We will not be able to upgrade you unless you have completed your indemnity
The upgrade is not applicable to Mac users and no action is required.
In addition to the Windows 11 rollout we are phasing out the use of the M Drive. While preparing for your Windows 11 upgrade it is vitally important that you start moving any documents you currently hold locally on your device and you will be required to complete an indemnity form to confirm this has happened. For the best possible experience you should also move your data from your M Drive onto your OneDrive. As part of the upgrade you will be expected to sign an indemnity form to confirm you have moved your data from your device onto your OneDrive.
You can find instructions on how to use OneDrive and move your data from M:Drive to OneDrive.
If you need any assistance, you can contact the IT helpdesk on extension 5555 or via HelpMe.
