Devra Gail Kleiman (1942-2010)

• Kleiman was an American biologist and wildlife conservationist who helped found the field of conservation biology.
• Kleiman received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her doctorate in zoology from the University of London.
• One of the first female scientists to be employed at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, she wrote over 150 scientific articles.
• Her research on giant pandas lead to successful captive breeding programs worldwide.
• The golden lion tamarin, a species of South American monkey, was saved from extinction in part through her work.
